The Office of Diverse Learner Supports and Services (ODLSS) is dedicated to delivering high-quality, specially tailored instructional support and services for all diverse learners within their least restrictive environments. We collaborate closely with various units, particularly schools and Networks, aiming to enhance the academic success of all diverse learners by ensuring they have meaningful and relevant access to grade-level core instruction in their neighborhood schools, schools of choice, or the nearest school to their residence.
Position Overview:
Citywide educators for students with visual impairments are tasked with delivering direct instruction and consultative services to students with visual disabilities, as outlined in their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Responsibilities include participating in student annual reviews and three-year re-evaluation meetings, conducting functional vision assessments and learning media assessments, preparing necessary reports for FIE/IEP conferences, developing student IEPs as vital members of IEP teams, providing strategies to adapt and modify the curriculum, physical environment, and assessments to cater to student needs, training students and staff on assistive technology devices for those with visual impairments, referring students to low vision clinics, instructing students on the use of low vision devices, maintaining weekly instructional plans and consultation logs, collecting data to document student progress toward achieving IEP goals, completing quarterly IEP progress reports, collaborating with classroom teachers and paraprofessionals to provide strategies for ensuring student success in the least restrictive environment, teaching and assessing student skills in the nine areas of the expanded core curriculum for students with visual disabilities, attending and engaging in citywide professional development sessions and meetings, implementing and/or sharing new strategies learned during professional development, providing services to school staff as assigned, submitting weekly schedules and monthly summaries punctually, and adhering to all mandated CPS and ODLSS policies and procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver direct instruction and consultative services for a designated caseload of students identified as having visual disabilities.
- Collaborate with classroom educators on the implementation of strategies, accommodations, and modifications that facilitate access to the common core state standards for students with visual impairments.
- Teach and evaluate students in the nine areas of the expanded core curriculum for students with visual disabilities.
- Gather data to track mastery of IEP goals as specified in student IEPs.
- Conduct functional vision assessments and learning media assessments in preparation for three-year re-evaluation meetings.
- Engage in annual IEP meetings and three-year re-evaluation eligibility conferences for students on the caseload.
- Consult with parents of students with visual disabilities regarding student progress and methods to reinforce skills learned in school.
- Provide direct instruction on utilizing high-tech and low-tech equipment specifically designed for students with visual disabilities.
- Participate in ongoing CPS and/or external professional development opportunities and share acquired knowledge with fellow team members.
- Comply with all central office requests for data collection related to student achievement and educator accountability.
Education Required:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
- Licensed in the state of Illinois to instruct students who are blind or have visual disabilities.
- A minimum of two (2) years as an educator for students who are blind or have visual disabilities.
- Proficiency in the literary braille code.
- Familiarity with the Nemeth code.
- Expertise in teaching students to utilize screen reading software, screen enlarging software, braille note takers, magnifiers, monocular telescopes, and other assistive devices or applications designed for individuals who are blind or have visual disabilities.
- Proficiency in using key commands and teaching keyboarding skills.
- Understanding of the common core state standards.
- Ability to design lessons covering the nine areas of the expanded core curriculum for students who are blind or have visual disabilities.
- Capability to work collaboratively as part of multiple teams across various schools within a designated area.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
As a condition of employment with Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to:
- Establish/Maintain Chicago Residency: Employees must reside within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district. This requirement does not apply to temporary/part-time positions; however, all CPS employees must be residents of Illinois.
- Be Fully Vaccinated Against COVID-19: Unless approved for a medical or religious exemption, all employees must be up-to-date on COVID-19 vaccinations, including boosters, and submit proof of vaccination to the district within 30 days of hire. "Up-to-date" on vaccination is defined as being at least two weeks past all primary vaccine doses and any applicable boosters.
