PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Delivers security services with integrity, equity, and empathy, even in challenging situations, adhering to established protocols and training. Fosters trust among patients, visitors, and colleagues through a professional and approachable demeanor. Remains vigilant, ethical, and compliant with all safety and security regulations. Ensures that the uniform and equipment are well-maintained.
  • Conducts regular patrols, both inside and outside the facility, to guarantee safety and security. Responsibilities include identifying vulnerabilities, hazards, and fire risks, managing patient valuables, and performing thorough searches for contraband. Provides assistance to team members, patients, and visitors by offering information, directions, and physical support. Oversees traffic control, monitors visitor behavior, and addresses unauthorized individuals.
  • Proactively prevents, responds to, and investigates incidents of workplace violence. Addresses service calls related to aggressive patients or visitors and team member incidents, serving as a key resource for de-escalation.
  • Engages in critical responsibilities to prepare for, prevent, and respond to emergencies, including lost or abducted infants/children, fires, and active threats. Responds promptly to crises, intervening physically as necessary in accordance with training.
  • Investigates incidents occurring on the premises and completes accurate and timely reports. Escalates complaints to the appropriate management and provides necessary documentation.
  • Conducts liaison rounds to build strong partnerships with all departments and units. Provides security awareness training to team members to enhance overall site security.
  • Collaborates with local law enforcement and first responder agencies. Coordinates and monitors law enforcement prisoner patient guard activities to ensure compliance with policies and prevent unsafe practices.
  • Maintains up-to-date training standards in radio communication, verbal de-escalation, CPR, application of clinical restraints, and use of conducted energy weapons (Taser), including any required training outlined in the Annual Training Plan.

Licenses/Certifications Required:

  • Healthcare Security Officer Certification (CHSO) from the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) must be obtained within two years of appointment.
  • A valid driver's license from the Division of Motor Vehicle.
  • Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) license from the Department of Justice (DOJ) is required to carry a taser on duty.
  • Must fulfill State of IL Department of Financial and Professional Regulation licensing requirements and obtain a Firearm Control Card (FCC) for Proprietary Personnel within 90 days of hire.
  • Certification in Conducted Energy Weapon (Taser) use is required within 90 days of hire and periodically thereafter.

Education Required: High School Diploma or GED

Experience Required:

Typically requires one year of experience in security, public safety, or customer service, particularly in responding to emergencies and addressing issues that may pose risks to patients, visitors, staff, or property.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Willingness to carry a department-authorized firearm while on duty, with the firearm and level III holster to be purchased and maintained by the Officer as per the Public Safety Firearms Policy.
  • Must achieve a passing score of 70% or greater on the State of IL Mandatory Annual Active Duty and Retired Officer Handgun Qualification Course of Fire annually. Probationary Officers must complete range qualification within their probationary period.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and reasoning while maintaining a courteous demeanor, even in interactions with aggressive individuals.
  • Experience in quickly assessing dangerous situations and taking appropriate action.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in using a computer for documentation, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and database entry.
  • Must successfully pass background checks, drug screening, and psychological assessments as required.
  • Ability to defend oneself and others in physical confrontations when necessary.
  • Effective communication skills, including the ability to hear and communicate via radio and telephone.
  • Ability to interact appropriately with all team members, patients, and visitors, especially in difficult situations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, and drive throughout the workday, lifting up to 35 lbs. occasionally. Must possess the strength and dexterity to operate a firearm safely.
  • Must have 20/20 vision in both eyes or correctable to 20/20 with lenses.
  • May be exposed to various hazards, requiring appropriate protective clothing.
  • Frequent exposure to aggressive behavior and emotionally charged situations.
  • Must be physically fit to navigate all areas of the facility and assist nursing staff as needed.
