Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Environmental Health Specialist to join our team at the Tulsa Health Department. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for conducting inspections of commercial food establishments and institutional facilities to ensure compliance with state and local public health laws and regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct physical inspections of food establishments and institutional facilities to identify potential health hazards and ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Collect and analyze data, samples, and test results to determine the presence of health hazards and recommend corrective actions.
  • Provide education and training to food establishment representatives on proper methods of personal hygiene and food sanitation.
  • Investigate complaints and write enforcement letters to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Participate in licensure and certification programs to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Make recommendations for remedial actions to correct environmental health problems.
  • Conduct follow-up activities to monitor progress toward correcting conditions.
  • Interpret applicable regulations and ordinances to determine compliance or appropriate corrective measures.
  • Provide routine technical assistance to industry, community groups, and others regarding environmental health programs.
  • Assist in reviewing plans for proposed food and institutional facilities and conducting epidemiological investigations.
  • Complete required training in support of duties and responsibilities of this position.
Requirements
  • Baccalaureate degree in physical, natural, or biological science, public health, environmental health, environmental science, or related field.
  • Registered with the Sanitarian Advisory Council, Oklahoma State Department of Health, or be eligible for registration.
  • Good oral and written communication skills to effectively present information and operate audio-visual equipment.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.
Working Conditions

This position requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities. The individual must be able to respond to emergency situations within an hour of receiving notification. The position also requires the ability to work in extreme weather conditions and exposure to chemical and safety hazards.
