Join the City of Wichita's Public Works and Utilities department as a Senior Assistant Maintenance Engineer. This leadership role is responsible for the maintenance of streets and public transportation infrastructure, including street maintenance, traffic control, and sign maintenance.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Direct and coordinate operations and maintenance activities related to landfill, traffic control, street cleaning, street and bridge maintenance, snow and ice removal, and infrastructure management systems.
  • Prioritize the installation and maintenance of signs, signals, pavement markings, and parking meters.
  • Evaluate signal, signing, and marking plans prepared by KDOT, consultants, and the Engineering Division.
  • Inspect streets and public rights-of-way to ensure they are maintained in accordance with City standards and policies.
  • Develop budgets and monitor expenditures.
  • Meet and confer with officials from regulatory agencies, such as the Corps of Engineers, Kansas Department of Health and Education, Kansas Department of Transportation, and consultants employed by the City.
  • Review products and prepare specifications for purchase.
  • Direct the development and administration of safety activities among employees.
  • Coordinate emergency response activities of the Maintenance Division.
  • Assume responsibilities of supervisor in their absence.
Requirements:
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques involved in traffic operations and maintenance, landfill, street cleaning, snow and ice removal, drainage, and street and bridge maintenance activities.
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering principles related to pavement and bridge maintenance and construction.
  • Considerable knowledge of the City's budgeting and estimating principles and practices in order to develop detailed operating, capital, and contractual budgets of the division.
  • Considerable knowledge of federal, state, and local laws related to the work.
  • Considerable knowledge of current literature and recent developments in the field of civil engineering.
  • Ability to analyze and systematically compile technical and statistical data and to develop and prepare reports and specifications.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to use a computer to access, interpret, and record information.
  • Ability to conduct detailed technical studies and prepare corresponding written reports.
  • Ability to traverse uneven terrain, climb steps or ladders, and tolerate airborne environmental nuisances associated with building construction sites.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, representatives of other organizations, and the public.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license.
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
Education and Experience:
  • Graduation from a four-year college with a bachelor's degree in engineering that is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
  • Three years of progressively responsible experience in construction, design, and/or operations engineering work.
  • A Professional Engineer (PE) license, or registration as a professional civil engineer in the State of Kansas within one year of hiring.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.
