Job Title: Transportation Worker 1 - Equipment Operator

Join the West Virginia Transportation Department as a Transportation Worker 1 - Equipment Operator and contribute to the maintenance and construction of highways. This entry-level position offers a unique opportunity to develop skills and knowledge in equipment operation, safety procedures, and teamwork.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate a light truck or vehicle for regular operations, snow removal, and ice control.
  • Operate various equipment, including fork trucks, end loaders, skid steers, rollers, utility tractors, and brush chippers.
  • Control brush and vegetation using hand tools and other equipment.
  • Perform minor maintenance on fleet equipment and vehicles.
  • Transport fuel to equipment.
  • Answer telephone and radio calls during snow removal and ice control.
  • Flag traffic at construction sites.
Requirements:
  • No prior experience required.
  • No formal education required.
  • Ability to learn from example and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, repair work orders).

Additional Information:

The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six months of employment. Progress through the apprenticeship program and opportunities for advancement are dependent on hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, and obtaining and maintaining a CDL.
