Position Title: Counselor for Survivors of Violence

Position Overview:
The Michigan State University Center for Survivors is a confidential initiative dedicated to supporting individuals affected by intimate partner violence and stalking. The Counselor will deliver empathetic, non-judgmental assistance to those in need, ensuring a safe space for healing and recovery.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conducts individual therapy sessions for individuals impacted by intimate partner violence and stalking.
  • Facilitates initial assessments with new clients and meticulously documents the findings.
  • Provides essential information regarding reporting mechanisms, healthcare alternatives, and advocacy resources available at the Center for Survivors.
  • Assists clients in navigating the Michigan Crime Victims Compensation application process.
  • Coordinates referrals to appropriate services within the Center for Survivors, on campus, and in the broader community as necessary.
  • Monitors and follows up on referrals to ensure the delivery of quality care tailored to each client's unique needs.
  • Completes necessary documentation for grants, university requirements, and program evaluations.
  • Fosters collaborative relationships with campus and community partners to enhance service delivery.
  • Upholds client confidentiality in accordance with ethical and legal standards.
  • Engages in additional responsibilities as assigned.
  • Provides support and guidance to volunteers involved in crisis intervention initiatives.
  • Facilitates training sessions for new volunteers in the Survivor Advocacy Crisis Intervention program once per semester.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications:
Applicants should possess knowledge equivalent to that typically acquired through one or two years of graduate study beyond a Bachelor's degree, such as a Master's in Social Work. A minimum of one to three years of progressively responsible experience in providing advocacy and counseling to survivors of interpersonal violence is preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. State licensure as a social worker or professional counselor is required.

Preferred Skills:
  • Proven ability to provide services and build rapport with diverse populations.
  • Experience exceeding three years in crisis intervention, advocacy, and/or counseling for survivors of interpersonal violence.
  • Background in providing victim advocacy services within a university or college environment.
  • Familiarity with data collection and reporting processes.
  • Understanding of the dynamics of intimate partner violence and the typical responses to trauma.
  • Experience applying an intersectional approach with a focus on multiculturalism, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated empathy and effective communication skills.
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation abilities.
  • Capacity to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Commitment to honesty and maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Aptitude for collaborating with other professionals and victim service providers.
