Job Overview

Position Summary

The Youth Support Specialist is accountable for overseeing and guiding adolescents assigned to their care.

Qualifications

Ideal candidates will possess prior experience in managing challenging youth behaviors.

Essential Requirements for Youth Support Specialist:

  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED
  • Must be in good physical and mental condition
  • Must demonstrate the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and various external stakeholders, including representatives from other organizations and the families of the youth.
  • Must be familiar with all policies and procedures of the organization
  • Must hold a valid driver's license and maintain current auto insurance
  • Must successfully complete the crisis intervention and restraint training assessment

Annual Performance Reviews: The job description serves as a comprehensive guide for the employee's responsibilities, and adherence to it is mandatory. Performance evaluations will occur annually, and employees with three or more unsatisfactory ratings may face termination, reassignment, or a professional development plan.

Performance Evaluation Areas

Performance evaluations provide an opportunity for management to discuss the employee's past performance, areas for improvement, and future goals. Clear expectations help reduce confusion regarding job responsibilities. Evaluations utilize a grading system: E=Excellent, S=Satisfactory, N=Needs Improvement, U=Unsatisfactory. Receiving an E indicates no room for improvement, while a U signifies consistent underperformance. Employees with three or more unsatisfactory ratings may be subject to disciplinary actions.

Performance Area I: Standards

  1. Engages in approved crisis de-escalation and restraint techniques as necessary, documenting all actions appropriately.
  2. Completes all required documentation accurately, with the Team Lead as the initial signer.
  3. Maintains active engagement with youth, ensuring proximity control.
  4. Interacts with youth during downtime, such as games or television.
  5. Remains present in assigned areas.
  6. Implements structured programming for youth in care.
  7. Supervises youth during outings, adhering to all policies.
  8. Facilitates assigned non-therapeutic group activities.
  9. Accurately verifies and calculates point sheets.
  10. Demonstrates knowledge of all organizational policies.
  11. Consistently wears the designated uniform.
  12. Reports all youth-related issues to the Team Lead and Unit Coordinator.
  13. Communicates any policy violations to the appropriate authorities.

Performance Area II: Clinical

  1. Provides therapeutic supervision and interaction with assigned youth throughout the shift.
  2. Familiarizes with and follows clients' treatment plans, documenting all interventions.
  3. Reports any concerns regarding youth to management immediately.

Performance Area III: Communication

  1. Discusses shift dynamics and youth moods with the outgoing and incoming Unit Coordinators.
  2. Engages with assigned youth at the beginning of each shift to address any concerns.
  3. Maintains communication tailored to the individual needs of youth.
  4. Shares observations and concerns regarding youth with the Team Lead and Unit Coordinator.
  5. Earns respect from youth through respectful interactions.
  6. Maintains professionalism with all colleagues and management.
  7. Communicates appropriately with youth, avoiding inappropriate language.
  8. Ensures all issues are communicated according to policy during the shift.

Performance Area IV: Documentation

  1. Completes and signs the End of Shift Checklist, ensuring all documentation is accurate.
  2. Supervises and verifies youth cleaning tasks, completing the Cleaning Checklist.
  3. Conducts regular head counts and documents findings accordingly.
  4. Verifies and signs off on Room Maintenance/Damage Checklists.
  5. Completes all necessary paperwork for incidents and restraints before the end of the shift.
  6. Fills out the Laundry Checklist on designated days.

Performance Area V: Attendance

  1. Participates in weekly team meetings for the assigned unit.
  2. Arrives on time, dressed appropriately, and completes the scheduled shift.
  3. Adheres to all attendance policies consistently.

Performance Area VI: Assigned Duties

  1. Completes all tasks assigned by management to meet the agency's needs.

Working Conditions:

The role involves mental and visual demands, including prolonged periods of sitting and limited lifting. The work environment is typical of an office setting with some exposure to noise and stress, given the nature of the facility.

Physical Requirements:

Must be capable of lifting and carrying light loads, possess sufficient mobility to navigate the facility, and participate in crisis intervention when necessary.

Mental Requirements:

Must maintain emotional stability and organizational skills, demonstrating the ability to remain calm and focused in a structured environment.
