New York, New York, United States Braze Full time

At Braze, we have cultivated a team of approachable, exceptionally kind, and deeply passionate individuals.

We aim to fuel that passion by establishing high standards, promoting collaboration, and fostering work-life balance as we collectively navigate rapid global growth while striving for greater equity and opportunity both within and outside our organization.

To thrive in this environment, you must be ready to set ambitious goals for yourself and those around you. There is always an opportunity to contribute: exercising autonomy, embracing accountability, and being receptive to diverse perspectives are vital to our ongoing success. Our profound curiosity to learn and our eagerness to share varied interests with others infuses our culture with a unique vibrancy.

If you are motivated to tackle exhilarating challenges and possess a proactive mindset in the face of change, you will be empowered to make a significant impact here, supported by a sharp and passionate team.

As a Platform Software Engineer (PSWE), you will be tasked with constructing, maintaining, and enhancing our internal infrastructure as a service platform. Platform engineers are software engineers who apply robust engineering principles, operational discipline, and advanced automation to the environments and infrastructure services we provide. We specialize in transferring expertise in deploying and managing infrastructure from individuals to software—whether it involves database provisioning and upgrades, Kafka topic management, or specific interests in high-scale data or distributed systems.

Our team plays a crucial role in enhancing the reliability of automation infrastructure. It empowers Braze's other engineering teams to seamlessly utilize the infrastructure products and platforms we develop. Braze operates at an extensive scale, managing over 3.3 billion monthly active users across our clients, collecting hundreds of billions of data points each month, and dispatching billions of messages to end-users daily. Our technology stack is diverse, rooted in Ruby on Rails, MongoDB, Redis, Kafka, Kubernetes, and more. As a Platform Software Engineer at Braze, you will collaborate with your team and consumer engineering teams to build and continuously enhance the infrastructure as a service platform that every other team at Braze relies on.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate with Braze's engineering teams on:
    • Defining and implementing IaaS solutions that facilitate quicker building and deployment
    • Creating monitoring and alerting systems that focus on symptoms rather than outages
    • Ensuring that Braze adheres to our stringent enterprise-grade SLAs with clients
  • Develop Braze's internal Infrastructure as a Service platform (IaaS):
    • Design, implement, and maintain the software services that deliver custom infrastructure services
    • Provide centralized/common tools, services, and automation frameworks essential for scaling operations and capacity management
    • Alleviate operational challenges and enhance the daily workflow of Braze's engineering teams by integrating automation into our IaaS platform
  • Manage incidents:
    • Participate in a PagerDuty rotation to respond to availability incidents and support fellow engineers
    • Utilize your on-call shift to prevent incidents from occurring
    • Conduct retrospectives on all incidents to transform lessons learned into system improvements, changes, and automation
QUALIFICATIONS
  • 5+ years of experience in full-stack development
  • Ability to think critically about systems—interfaces, boundaries, edge cases, failure modes, behaviors, and specific implementations
  • A collaborative spirit with a focus on documentation and swift delivery
    • Experience collaborating across global remote teams, often working asynchronously
    • Commitment to documenting processes to avoid redundant learning or planning
    • Delivering promptly to satisfy our customers, including internal stakeholders
  • A proactive, problem-solving attitude; you feel compelled to fix issues as they arise
  • A desire to address everyday challenges faced by software engineers and automate repetitive tasks
  • Strong ability to manage multiple tasks and expectations simultaneously
  • Experience working on large-scale API-driven systems
  • Proficient in application and systems observability
  • Experience in building and automating Kubernetes-based operators/custom resources
For candidates based in the United States, the pay range for this position at the start of employment is expected to be between $160,000 and $200,000/year with an expected On Target Earnings (OTE) between $180,000 and $215,000/year (including bonus or commission). Your exact offer may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. In addition to cash compensation, Braze offers full- and part-time employees a comprehensive Total Rewards package that includes equity grants of restricted stock (RSUs) so that all Braze employees own a piece of our company.
