Victim Support Specialist

Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Community Services Manager, the Victim Support Specialist plays a crucial role in assisting individuals affected by sexual assault. This position involves providing comprehensive support from immediate crisis intervention to the formulation of personal goals and plans aimed at fostering a life free from violence. The Specialist will also engage in community outreach, educational initiatives, and collaboration with various agencies to ensure a coordinated response to sexual violence. A significant portion of the role will be dedicated to serving rural communities.
Key Responsibilities
- Offer guidance to survivors in emergency shelters and those not residing in shelters, facilitating their journey from crisis intervention through intake, safety planning, and the legal process.
- Engage in weekly meetings with clients to support their individual goals.
- Organize support group sessions to provide educational resources and facilitate discussions.
- Advocate for survivors with legal, social service, educational, and healthcare organizations, ensuring they receive necessary referrals.
- Disseminate informational materials to key stakeholders, including educational institutions, healthcare providers, law enforcement, and social service organizations, to raise awareness about available resources.
- Deliver presentations on sexual assault issues and available support to diverse audiences, from school-aged children to seniors.
- Assess community training needs as identified by program requirements.
- Collaborate with other victim service organizations to enhance the coordinated response to sexual assault.
- Participate in regular staff meetings.
- Ensure confidentiality of clients and program operations.
- Maintain accurate documentation and records as required.
- Represent the organization professionally at various meetings and events.
- Be available for on-call duties, including hospital responses.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills
A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience is preferred.
- Commitment to obtaining 10 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) annually.
- Ability to work independently while managing responsibilities and handling stressful situations.
- Capability to prioritize tasks and adapt to changing circumstances.
- Familiarity with community resources and support organizations is advantageous.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in standard office software, including Word, Outlook, and Excel.
Additional Requirements
To effectively perform the essential functions of this role, the employee must regularly engage in activities that may require sitting, standing, bending, and reaching, with sufficient manual dexterity to operate standard office equipment. A valid driver's license is necessary, and the role may involve lifting up to 40 pounds. Normal hearing and vision ranges are required.
