Job Overview

Scientific Drilling Inc. is seeking an Intern in Embedded Systems Engineering to contribute to our Applied Technologies Center. The successful candidate will possess a solid understanding of embedded systems both in hardware and software, along with experience in development tools and technologies pertinent to embedded systems.

As a prominent player in directional drilling and wellbore navigation services, we are dedicated to delivering innovative and sophisticated solutions to complex technical challenges faced by our clients globally.

This internship will be a part-time role within our Research and Development Department, where the Embedded Systems Engineering Intern will undertake the following key responsibilities:


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, and maintain firmware for embedded products.
  • Develop, code, and troubleshoot multi-threaded real-time firmware.
  • Establish testing strategies for various components and products.
  • Collaborate with hardware and software engineers, Product Line Management, Operations Support teams, and Testing teams for product improvement and issue resolution.
  • Document processes and outcomes effectively.
  • Comprehend both hardware and software components.
  • Engage with engineers, project managers, clients, vendors, and other stakeholders on engineering initiatives.
  • Uphold and enhance safety standards.
  • Analyze system failures to identify root causes in alignment with the Quality Management System (QMS).
  • Approach every task with enthusiasm and determination.
  • Utilize logical reasoning to address problems with effective solutions.
  • Perform additional relevant duties as required by business needs.

Essential Competencies:

  • Experience with embedded systems development and testing tools, including JTAG, logic analyzers, and oscilloscopes.
  • Familiarity with version control and build systems.
  • Knowledge of microcontroller applications, peripherals, and supporting circuitry.
  • Understanding of embedded systems Ethernet stacks.
  • Experience in low power design and microprocessor interfacing.
  • Able to thrive in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and multitasking abilities.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Professional demeanor and adherence to company dress code and conduct standards.
  • Commitment to meeting all safety requirements.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow instructions accurately.

Qualifications Required:

  • Pursuing a bachelor's degree in Computer or Electronic Engineering or a related field.
  • Junior or Senior academic standing.
  • Experience with embedded software development tools.
  • Proficiency in C/C++ programming and assembly language.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with microcontrollers, particularly Atmel ARM/Cortex, Microchip PIC, or similar.
  • Hardware debugging experience with JTAG, oscilloscopes, and/or logic analyzers.
  • Familiarity with CAN Bus, RS-485, Ethernet, or similar communication protocols is advantageous.
  • Experience with real-time operating systems.
