Washington, United States Blue Origin LLC Full time
Principal RF Engineer, Radar Systems

We are seeking a seasoned RF engineer to join our team at Blue Origin LLC. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in radar system design, analysis, and modeling, with a focus on high-frequency applications.

This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin's multiple Blue Moon lander product lines. To further Blue Origin's mission of having millions of people living and working in space, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

The selected individual will be responsible for developing and optimizing radar components, including custom designs for antenna systems that enhance lander navigation performance. This requires leveraging expertise in material properties, geometric constraints, and theoretical system efficiency.

In this position, you will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of engineers to deliver qualified radar components on schedule and budget. You will work closely with peers in the Navigation team to identify optimization needs and develop product definitions that meet navigation requirements.

As a subject matter expert, you will serve as the go-to person for radar element development, working with supply chain teams and other departments to ensure smooth execution of development efforts. Your contributions will be crucial in increasing performance, enabling new capabilities, reducing cost, and reducing cycle time/production time.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to guide radar component design and development.
  • Work with the Navigation team to identify optimization needs and develop product definitions.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on radar element development.
  • Ensure timely delivery of qualified radar components.
  • Collaborate with supply chain teams to facilitate smooth development execution.
  • Routinely seek opportunities to improve performance, reduce costs, and streamline processes.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • 15+ years of experience in radar system design, analysis, modeling, and spacecraft navigation assemblies.
  • Demonstrated experience in radar system development, prototyping, and testing for aerospace applications.
  • Strong knowledge of fundamentals, including system design and analysis, signal processing, antenna design and selection, and RF system modeling and simulation.
  • Experience working across multiple frequency bands, such as UHF, L, X, Ka, and millimeterwave frequency.
  • Extensive understanding of RF components and concepts (radios, noise filters, amplifiers, RF integrated circuits, PCB layout, firmware, FPGAs, modulation schemes, forward error correction, etc.).
  • Deep comprehension of pulse and/or FMCW radars, non-linearity impacts on range resolutions, radar back-scatter signal processing, and vehicle-level system simulation.
  • Ability to challenge status quo, break down issues to their fundamental elements, and drive efficient product solutions.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills to influence stakeholders and present technical analyses to non-technical audiences.
  • Strong technical background or technical writing experience.
  • Ability to build trust, maintain positive relationships, and contribute to an inclusive culture.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident, or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering with a focus on high-frequency radar system design and optimization.
  • Expertise with modeling and analysis tools like ANSYS HFSS, MATLAB, FEKO.

Compensation Range: $227,058.00 - $317,881.20 per annum, based on location and experience.

Benefits: Competitive benefits package includes medical, dental, vision, life insurance, paid parental leave, short-term disability, long-term disability, 401(k) plan, education support program, and paid time off. Eligibility may vary by role type.
