Key Responsibilities

As the Head of Research Initiatives, you will play a pivotal role within the ideas42 organization, directly reporting to the Chief Innovation Officer. Your expertise will guide project teams in employing innovative and rigorous analytical methodologies tailored to their objectives. You will oversee and refine the evaluation strategies across all projects, while also spearheading the organization’s overall impact evaluation framework. Your role will ensure that data analysis adheres to the highest standards and that results are communicated transparently.

Core Duties Include:

  • Supporting project teams in designing and analyzing robust impact evaluations:
    • Offering constructive feedback and mentorship to project teams as they craft and interpret the outcomes of randomized controlled trials aimed at assessing the effectiveness of behaviorally designed interventions.
    • Acting as a resource for project teams regarding experimental design and data analysis, particularly for intricate designs, challenging datasets, or projects best suited for quasi-experimental methodologies.
    • Assisting teams in the formulation and analysis of descriptive, exploratory, or quasi-experimental research.
    • Providing support for qualitative research design and analysis.
    • Collaborating with internal resources and academic advisors to leverage relevant expertise as needed.
  • Ensuring the integrity of project outputs related to evaluation design and data analysis:
    • Establishing best practices to guarantee the meticulous and precise design and analysis of experiments and quasi-experiments, including reviewing study designs, pre-analysis plans, datasets, and coding, as well as creating replication protocols.
    • Guiding the analysis and documentation of experimental findings to accurately represent results while addressing any limitations encountered.
  • Enhancing organizational capacity for evaluation design and data analysis:
    • Keeping abreast of the latest advancements in quantitative analysis and research methodologies, adapting practices at ideas42 accordingly.
    • Curating and developing resources to assist project teams in the design and analysis of rigorous impact evaluations.
    • Creating and delivering training sessions and professional development opportunities (e.g., workshops) to enhance staff capabilities at all levels.
    • Producing training materials for our partners' personnel.
  • Overseeing and advancing ideas42's organizational measurement efforts:
    • Designing and leading the collection and analysis of objective measures of impact and success for ideas42 as a whole.
    • Collaborating with academic institutions or external organizations as appropriate, such as supporting meta-analysis initiatives.
    • Developing and managing related knowledge management processes and systems.
    • Assisting in the creation of internal survey methodologies to assess and enhance ideas42's workplace culture and performance.
    • Formulating cost-effective strategies to accommodate a highly dynamic innovation organization with time-constrained personnel.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in Economics, Public Policy, Behavioral Science, or a related discipline with a strong focus on econometrics and impact evaluation.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in rigorous impact evaluation, including some experience in a leadership role.
  • Proven experience in designing, managing, and analyzing randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental designs in both field and laboratory settings.
  • Advanced proficiency in handling large datasets using econometric techniques and statistical analysis.
  • Experience in developing and implementing rigorous impact evaluation strategies for entire organizations or portfolios of interventions.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Proven track record of fostering and maintaining trusting relationships with internal or external project partners.
  • Commitment to delivering high-quality outputs and collaborating with teams to achieve them.
  • Strong knowledge of statistical software (R or Stata preferred).
  • Mission-driven, self-motivated, and capable of thriving in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Prior experience in the social sector, particularly with nonprofits, foundations, academia, or government, is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with the pedagogy of applied research and evaluation, along with teaching experience, is a plus.
