About the Department

The Department of World Languages and Cultures is a vibrant and diverse community that provides students with a broad and intimate understanding of the rich and varied cultures of our globe. Our department offers undergraduate majors in Arabic, Asian Languages, French, German Studies, and Spanish, as well as minors in various languages and cultures.

Job Summary

The successful candidate will provide academic advice to undergraduate World Languages and Cultures majors, coordinate study abroad advising, and facilitate coherence, stability, and consistency to the academic program. The Director will also be responsible for training faculty advisors, recruiting new World Language majors, and serving as the department's graduation clearance officer.

Key Responsibilities
  • Advise students about completion of World Languages curriculum requirements.
  • Help students define academic goals and gain an understanding of how to achieve them.
  • Understand and communicate to students the implications of the various program plans and degree progress.
  • Help students develop their academic focus within the major.
  • Keep abreast of relevant course offerings across the College and campus and maintain connections with student service staff across campus.
  • Understand, interpret, and enforce University, College, and Departmental policies while exploring academic and professional options.
  • Help students make transitions and access full range of university resources.
  • Serve as the primary administrative point of contact for students and staff with interest in or questions about our academic programs.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the advising and registration process on a continuing basis and put forth recommendations for process improvement.
  • Coordinate individual language section advisors and departmental recruitment, including attending university, college and departmental recruitment events as required.
  • Represent the department at New Student and Transfer Student Orientations throughout the year.
Requirements

The successful candidate will have a bachelor's degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience. Excellent interpersonal skills, including strong communication skills, are required. The candidate should also have demonstrated skills in the areas of judgment, decision-making, problem solving, organization, and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated interest and foundation in World Languages & Cultures, experience working with academic programs, and professional advising experience in a university setting are preferred qualifications.
