Position Overview:

ABOUT THE ROLE

VHB's Raleigh, NC office is seeking a Junior Transportation/Traffic Engineer to be part of our Transportation Systems division. The chosen candidate will collaborate with a team of traffic engineers and highway safety experts on a range of public, private, and institutional initiatives across various sectors, including municipal, state agencies, higher education, federal lands, and aviation.

Our ideal candidate possesses a keen interest in traffic and transportation engineering and is enthusiastic about applying practical solutions to real-world challenges for our clients. We seek someone who is open to on-the-job training in diverse traffic operations and capacity evaluation projects, which may include intersections, roadways, interchanges, traffic and transportation studies for land development, intersection and roadway improvement design, traffic management and signal timing, multimodal and safety assessments, school traffic studies, travel demand forecasting, and access management and corridor planning. This role offers the opportunity to develop and enhance a wide array of skills in traffic operations, transportation design, and/or transportation planning projects throughout North Carolina and the Mid-Atlantic region.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborating with a team of professionals to develop traffic and transportation planning and engineering solutions for various transportation projects.
  • Conducting operational analyses for intersections and corridors using tools such as Synchro, SimTraffic, HCS, Sidra, and others.
  • Analyzing, developing, and evaluating traffic improvement strategies.
  • Creating conceptual designs for intersection/roadway improvements and traffic signal plans using MicroStation and/or AutoCAD.
  • Formulating traffic management and signal timing plans.
  • Preparing comprehensive reports that summarize data and analysis, conveying findings and recommendations.
  • Collecting and organizing traffic data.
  • Performing field assessments for traffic safety.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Solid understanding of transportation engineering principles.
  • Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Detail-oriented and self-motivated.
  • Able to learn quickly, think critically, and develop new skills.
  • Effective in a collaborative team environment.

Educational Background

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • 0 to 1 year of experience in transportation, preferably in traffic or safety.
  • 1 to 3 years of relevant transportation experience is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Synchro/SimTraffic, Sidra, VISSIM, TransModeler, or other capacity analysis software is advantageous.
  • Experience with ArcGIS, AutoCAD, MicroStation, or other planning/design/data software is a plus.
  • EIT designation is preferred.
