Job Title: Security Inspector

Join the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) as a Security Inspector and contribute to the organization's mission to provide leadership, operational support, and oversight of the United Nations security management system globally.

Job Summary:

The Security Inspector is responsible for performing armed security functions and reporting directly to the Assistant Chief or another assigned supervising officer. This role requires a high level of professionalism, integrity, and commitment to the United Nations' values and principles.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Protect the life of persons in the UN complex and preserve UN property by leading the security coverage of entry points throughout the United Nations complex.
  • Lead the on-scene response to security and safety incidents on a daily basis and during periods of heightened security.
  • Lead the activities and operations of the Service and ensure post coverage as well as the formulation and application of various security plans and standard operating procedures.
  • Lead, direct, and guide subordinate supervisory staff in their duties, responsibilities, and performance.
  • Consult with and advise the Assistant Chief of all matters and activities of concern planned or taking place within the UN complex.
  • Ensure that the established goals and objectives are accomplished in accordance with prescribed priorities, time limitations, and financial conditions.
  • Determine work schedules and adjust thereto considering changing requirements.
  • Conduct regular briefings with supervisory personnel; counsel, coach, and mentor staff as required.
  • Develop, prepare, and manage security training programs, exercises, and drills.
  • Ensure that all posts are properly and effectively supervised and staffed by adjusting their composition for operational requirements.
  • Establish coordination mechanisms and standards for the work of specialized units in charge of technical areas such as investigations, technical counter-surveillance, threat, and risk analysis, electronic security, access control, and screening operations.
  • Review the recommendations of subordinate supervisors on candidates for recruitment and selection of staff for higher-level positions, lateral reassignments, and assignments to specialized units and deployments abroad.
  • Ensure that all incidents and complaints reported are effectively addressed and appropriate measures are taken to curtail reoccurrences.
  • Assist in the preparation of budget proposals and performance reports by drafting inputs.
  • Manage and process overtime and attendance of personnel under command.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid host country licenses, including a handgun license from the Police Department - City of New York (non-revoked) and a motor vehicle permit from the appropriate issuing authorities within the New York tristate area.
  • Valid UN Weapons Permit and meet all UN firearms qualification standards.
  • Passed the United Nations Security Officer Test (SOT).
  • Additional security or military training.
  • A minimum of 18 years of experience in security operations within the UN Security Service.
  • Experience in the security management of international high-level events.
  • Experience in the development of standards, instruction, and application of use of force equipment and firearms.
  • Experience in the design, implementation, and management of electronic security systems.
  • Experience in specialized security functions such as investigations, technical counter-surveillance, threat, and risk analysis, electronic security, access control, and screening operations.
Language Requirements:

Fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Assessment:

A written assessment test may be administered to applicants followed by a competency-based interview.
