About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Custodian to join our team at Portland Public Schools. As a Custodian, you will play a critical role in maintaining the cleanliness and organization of our schools, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for our students and staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Cleaning and Maintenance: Perform daily cleaning tasks, including dusting, sweeping, mopping, waxing floors, washing windows, and emptying waste baskets.
  • Room Prioritization: Prioritize the cleaning of different types of rooms, including restrooms, kitchens, cafeterias, gymnasiums, and other areas.
  • Equipment Operation: Operate minor mechanical equipment, such as waxers, polishers, scrubbers, edgers, power lawn mowers, and wet/dry vacuums.
  • Building Maintenance: Perform minor maintenance tasks, including changing lights, performing repairs, and other general custodial duties.
  • Collaboration: Work with school staff to set up buildings for after-school activities, special events, and meetings.
  • Emergency Response: Be available to respond to after-hours emergency situations, such as lockouts or facility issues.
Requirements
  • Communication Skills: Possess excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively interact with staff, students, and the public.
  • Physical Demands: Be able to lift, bend, stoop, twist, walk, and carry heavy objects for extended periods.
  • Equipment Operation: Demonstrate proficiency in operating various equipment, including boilers, heating and ventilation systems, and minor mechanical equipment.
  • Computer Skills: Possess basic computer skills, including the ability to use software and hardware systems.
  • Teamwork: Demonstrate a strong commitment to teamwork and collaboration, working effectively with diverse employees and stakeholders.
