Commercial Loan Assessment Specialist

Position Overview:
The Commercial Loan Assessment Specialist plays a crucial role in managing credit risk through comprehensive evaluations. This position involves conducting thorough reviews of the organization's commercial, consumer, and real estate lending practices to ensure adherence to established guidelines and standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Task 1: Review of Commercial and Agricultural Loans - 50%
- Execute independent assessments of commercial, agricultural, and commercial real estate loans to identify emerging risks and confirm the accuracy of the bank's risk rating systems and lending protocols.
- Engage in ongoing evaluations of all commercial loans and commitments.
- Verify assigned risk ratings in underwriting.
- Analyze underwriting evaluations regarding cash flow, repayment sources, policy adherence, exception approvals, guarantor, and collateral considerations.
- Adjust risk ratings as necessary based on identified risks during the review process.
- Ensure that booked loans comply with approved terms and structures.
- Confirm that underwriters' actions align with their designated lending authority.
- Validate that loans are properly documented to meet both bank and legal standards.
- Assess the quality and substance of underwriter-prepared credit displays and approval documentation, providing guidance on content and quality.
- Compile and present written reports summarizing findings and identified risks.
- Follow up on necessary corrective actions identified during reviews.
Task 2: Credit Risk Monitoring - 20%
- Conduct investigations and present post-analysis reports to the Credit Governance Committee regarding significant credit losses.
- Perform impairment analyses to support allowance estimations.
- Report on credit risk metrics to support the organization's key risk indicator program.
Task 3: Review of Small Business Loans - 15%
- Carry out independent evaluations of small business lending practices, including the utilization of automated scoring systems.
- Sample small business loan approvals to test compliance with written policies and defined scoring parameters.
- Ensure that overrides receive appropriate approvals.
- Review periodic scoring system reports to assess system usage and control.
- Sample small business loan files to confirm proper documentation and closure.
Task 4: Review of Consumer and Residential Loans - 15%
- Conduct independent evaluations of consumer and residential real estate lending practices, including the use of automated scoring systems.
- Sample direct and indirect consumer loan approvals to ensure compliance with written policies and applicable regulations.
- Review scoring system reports to evaluate system usage and control.
- Sample approved and declined overrides to ensure proper approvals.
- Sample loan files to confirm proper closure and documentation.
- Sample residential real estate loan approvals to ensure compliance with bank policy for retained loans.
Position Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A minimum of three to five years of banking experience in commercial lending, regulatory examinations, or internal loan review.
- Previous experience in commercial lending and/or loan review training is required.
- Comprehensive knowledge of banking lending principles, policies, and practices.
- Proficient in analyzing consumer and commercial financial statements.
- Familiarity with documentation standards for commercial, consumer, and residential real estate.

Physical Requirements:
Must be able to perform the following with or without reasonable accommodation:
- Extended periods of sitting at a desk and using office equipment.
- Ability to operate a personal computer/laptop for approximately 8 hours per day.
- Significant time spent reviewing physical and electronic documents.
- Occasional requirements to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Close vision is necessary for this role.
- Periodically, may involve light lifting of supplies and materials weighing approximately 20 lbs.
- Primarily work in an indoor environment.
