Inpatient Oncology Clinical Pharmacist Lead

The Clinical Pharmacist Lead embodies the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine, adhering to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, while ensuring compliance with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory standards.

Under the guidance of the Pharmacy Practice Coordinator and Manager of Pharmacy, the Clinical Pharmacist Lead plays a crucial role in facilitating daily operations and delivering high-quality service within designated practice areas.

This position serves as an advocate for pharmacy staff and collaborates closely with pharmacy leadership.


Key Responsibilities:


Legal and Regulatory:
Ensure adherence to all applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations governing pharmacy practice within assigned areas.
Support the maintenance of regulatory compliance within designated practice areas.

Pharmacy Services:
Assist in the implementation and maintenance of pharmacy services that are integral to the care delivery systems of Northwestern Medicine.
Utilize new technologies to enhance patient care, safety, and economic outcomes.
Fulfill all responsibilities, qualifications, licensing, and educational requirements of a Clinical Pharmacist.
Assist with the daily preparation, distribution, and management of all medications, including investigational drugs.
Collaborate with the Practice Coordinator to enhance patient care and workflow efficiencies.

Work alongside frontline pharmacy staff to ensure medications are provided appropriately to achieve desired therapeutic outcomes consistent with patient parameters and disease states.
Cooperate with fellow pharmacists to oversee and direct work area activities, assign tasks to technicians, and ensure departmental objectives are met.
Facilitate a team-oriented approach to patient care problem-solving and service delivery.
Act as the first-line escalation point for issues.

Leadership and Management:
Utilize effective communication skills to influence the behavior and opinions of professional and technical colleagues.
Support talent development in both technical and clinical roles.
Assist the Practice Coordinator in managing schedules and facilitating necessary coverage arrangements while managing productivity based on patient care needs.
Support trainees, including fellows, residents, and students, while fostering a high-morale environment with engaged staff.
Maintain interdepartmental relationships by serving as a subject matter expert between the pharmacy department and other disciplines.
Assist the Practice Coordinator in achieving organizational goals and serve as a role model for pharmacy staff.

Safety and Quality Management:
Assist in implementing medication safety initiatives across hospital and outpatient settings.
Participate in and support medication use quality initiatives through various committees, including the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committees.
Engage in quality initiatives as outlined in the annual quality plan.
Promote evidence-based medicine through staff education and participation in collaborative practice agreements and policy development.
Assist in monitoring and evaluating policies and practices to recommend operational changes.

Education and Staff Development:
Actively participate in post-graduate training in pharmacy that meets ASHP accreditation standards.
Coordinate educational programming for technical and pharmacist staff to promote ongoing professional development.
Facilitate training for new Clinical Pharmacists.

Qualifications:
Required:
Graduate of an accredited college of Pharmacy – Bachelor's or Doctor of Pharmacy Degree.
Licensed Clinical Pharmacist in Illinois.
Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Clinical Pharmacist, preferably in a healthcare institution.
Experience in managing operations, personnel, quality functions, and the professional aspects of pharmacy practice.
Demonstrated effective communication skills, both oral and written, with all levels of internal and external stakeholders.

Preferred:
Experience typically gained through at least 3 years of pharmacy experience in a healthcare institution.
Completion of an accredited Pharmacy Residency.
