Under the guidance of the Pharmacy Practice Coordinator and Pharmacy Manager, the Lead Clinical Pharmacist plays a pivotal role in managing daily operations and ensuring the delivery of high-quality pharmaceutical services within designated areas. This position serves as a key advocate for pharmacy personnel, collaborating closely with pharmacy leadership. The Lead Pharmacist is responsible for addressing staff inquiries, working alongside the Practice Coordinator to resolve operational challenges, facilitating educational initiatives, and providing expert recommendations on workflows and policies.

Key Responsibilities:

Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure adherence to all applicable federal, state, and local regulations governing pharmacy practice.
  • Support the maintenance of compliance standards within assigned practice areas.

Pharmaceutical Services

  • Assist in the implementation and maintenance of pharmacy services integral to Northwestern Medicine's care delivery systems.
  • Utilize innovative technologies to enhance patient care, safety, and economic outcomes.
  • Fulfill all responsibilities and qualifications of a Clinical Pharmacist.
  • Oversee the preparation, distribution, and management of all medications, including investigational drugs.
  • Collaborate with the Practice Coordinator to optimize patient care and workflow efficiency.
  • Work alongside pharmacy staff to ensure appropriate medication provision for desired therapeutic outcomes.
  • Direct the activities of pharmacy technicians and ensure departmental objectives are met.
  • Promote a collaborative approach to patient care problem-solving.
  • Act as the primary escalation point for pharmacy-related issues.

Leadership and Management

  • Employ effective communication skills to influence colleagues and foster collaboration.
  • Support the development of talent in both technical and clinical roles.
  • Assist the Practice Coordinator in managing staff schedules and productivity.
  • Facilitate necessary arrangements for coverage based on patient care needs.
  • Mentor trainees, including fellows, residents, and students.
  • Foster a positive work environment that promotes staff engagement and morale.
  • Maintain interdepartmental relationships as a subject matter expert.
  • Assist in achieving organizational goals alongside the Practice Coordinator.
  • Serve as a role model and resource for pharmacy staff.

Quality and Safety Management

  • Implement medication safety initiatives across hospital and outpatient settings.
  • Participate in medication use quality initiatives through various committees.
  • Engage in quality improvement initiatives as outlined in the annual quality plan.
  • Support evidence-based medicine practices through staff education and policy development.
  • Monitor and evaluate policies to recommend operational enhancements.

Education and Staff Development

  • Actively engage in post-graduate pharmacy training that meets accreditation standards.
  • Coordinate educational programming for technical and pharmacist staff to promote professional growth.
  • Facilitate training for new Clinical Pharmacists.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Graduate of an accredited pharmacy program – Bachelor's or Doctor of Pharmacy Degree.
  • Licensed Clinical Pharmacist in Illinois.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Clinical Pharmacist in a healthcare setting.
  • Experience in managing pharmacy operations, personnel, and quality functions.
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills with diverse stakeholders.

Preferred:

  • At least 3 years of pharmacy experience in a healthcare institution.
  • Completion of an accredited Pharmacy Residency.
