Urban Peak is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing services for youth experiencing homelessness or at imminent risk of becoming homeless. Our goal is to meet youth where they are and provide them with the assistance and support needed to become self-sufficient.

About the Role

We are seeking a Youth Development Specialist to join our team. This role will be responsible for providing direct supervision of youth in our shelter and housing programs, assisting in increasing self-efficacy and reducing risky behavior, ensuring client safety, and maintaining a safe and positive environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Facilitate group activities and discussions to promote a therapeutic environment and encourage healthy relationships among youth.
  • Provide crisis intervention and counseling services to youth in person or via phone to ensure their emotional and physical safety.
  • Supervise youth in accordance with facility rules and regulations, promoting a safe and respectful living environment.
  • Maintain accurate records of admission, services received by clients, and relevant events during shifts.
Requirements and Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent and two (2) years' experience working with high-risk, adolescent populations in a shelter, residential, or transitional housing environment.
  • Lived experience reflective of the youth we serve, although not required.
  • The ability to connect and work effectively with a diverse, resistant street youth population.
  • Exercise discretion and independent judgment, setting clear and appropriate boundaries with youth.
  • Knowledge and understanding of issues affecting homeless adolescents, mental health, and substance abuse among high-risk young adults.
  • The ability to provide trauma-informed services that are appropriate and effective.
  • Problem-solving skills, including multi-tasking, assessment, organization, and prioritization.
  • Team orientation and the ability to coordinate with various departments and staff.
  • Understanding of the provision of and commitment to trauma-informed care.
  • QMAP certification or eligibility for QMAP certification.
