Chief Curator of Special Collections

The Getty Research Institute is seeking a visionary Chief Curator to lead its Special Collections department. As a key member of the GRI management team, the successful candidate will develop and implement strategic priorities for the department, overseeing a team of curators and managing a vast collection of rare materials.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in art history, cultural studies, or a related field, with a proven track record of curatorial experience and a deep understanding of the art market. Fluency in at least one foreign language is required, and experience working with encyclopedic collections is highly desirable.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and implement a collection acquisition framework and strategy, with a focus on managing large collections and promoting cataloging.
- Build and maintain relationships with institutional partners, including the Museum, Conservation Institute, and Getty Digital.
- Oversee the curatorial team, providing guidance and support in promoting Special Collections holdings through research, exhibitions, and publications.
- Work with the Exhibitions department to develop an exhibition program, and collaborate with the Library Reference librarians on teaching classes and workshops.
- Master's degree in art history or art administration, or 10+ years of curatorial experience.
- Broad knowledge of Art History, Cultural Studies, and related fields.
- Curatorial experience or adjacent experience.
- Fluency in at least one foreign language.
- Highest-level technical contributor in specialized curatorial functions.
- Experience in the art market.
