POSITION SUMMARY:

The Gastroenterology Research Engineer will become a vital member of the Traverso laboratory at Brigham and Women's Hospital, focusing on the innovation of pharmacological solutions for chronic health conditions such as diabetes and obesity.

This laboratory is composed of a diverse team of engineers, scientists, and medical professionals dedicated to the preclinical advancement of technologies that redefine medical practices.

The selected candidate will leverage their knowledge in molecular biology, biomaterials, synthetic biology, or biomedical engineering to contribute to the creation of implantable drug delivery systems and cellular therapies.

This role is structured as a one-year term with potential for extension.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and implement experimental protocols aimed at developing and assessing new drug formulations, delivery devices, and cellular therapies;
  • Evaluate the efficacy of drug formulations, delivery systems, and cellular therapies in both small and large preclinical animal models;
  • Utilize statistical methods to analyze experimental data;
  • Document, summarize, and present research findings effectively;
  • Manage reagent procurement and maintain accurate records;
  • Adhere to safety protocols, prepare the laboratory for inspections, and address any issues;
  • Communicate lab policies and provide training as necessary.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., molecular biology, polymer chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, biomedical engineering);
  • A minimum of two years of experience in a laboratory setting (including undergraduate experience);
  • Proven track record of producing precise and high-quality data;
  • Experience in operating and maintaining laboratory instruments;
  • Ability to summarize, report, and present results to fellow researchers;
  • Strong organizational, time management, and documentation skills;
  • Eagerness to learn new scientific techniques and tools;
  • Capability to work both independently and collaboratively;
  • Understanding of basic safety protocols and the ability to maintain a safe working environment.
Skills and Competencies:
  • Familiarity with molecular biology assays (e.g., ELISA, PCR, protein expression, phage display, next-generation sequencing, cell culture);
  • Experience in drug formulation and characterization;
  • Knowledge of polymer synthesis and characterization;
  • Proficiency in analytical techniques (e.g., HPLC, LC-MS, SPR, XRD, CD, ICP);
  • Experience working with laboratory animals.
