Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States Brigham and Women's Hospital Full time
About the Traverso Lab
The Traverso Lab is dedicated to the advancement of translational engineering with significant implications in healthcare. Our primary objective is to enhance patient outcomes through innovative medical solutions. Research initiatives encompass a variety of medical apparatuses, including diagnostic tools, drug delivery systems, surgical instruments, and implantable technologies. Dr.

Giovanni Traverso, a Physician-Scientist, serves as an Associate Professor at MIT Mechanical Engineering and as an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School and the Division of Gastroenterology at Brigham and Women's Hospital.

This role necessitates direct onboarding and will be based at a satellite facility of Brigham and Women's Hospital, while collaborating with a diverse team across various MIT/Harvard/BWH institutions.

Position Overview:

In this position, you will concentrate on the design, production, and evaluation of micro-scale devices utilizing a cutting-edge cleanroom fabrication facility.

You will be part of a fabrication team that includes mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, imaging specialists, and experts in microfabrication and micro/nano technologies.

Your collaboration with this multidisciplinary group will involve the design, production, and evaluation of medical devices, particularly focusing on innovative drug delivery systems.

The role encompasses various aspects of design and production, including microfabrication techniques (photolithography, thin film deposition, wet and dry chemical etching, metrology, packaging, 3D printing technologies such as SLA and FDM, laser micromachining, and other mechanical fabrication/testing equipment).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with postdoctoral researchers to design prototype medical devices and drug delivery systems.
  • Engage in microfabrication of MEMS within a cleanroom environment.
  • Develop and conduct chemical and mechanical characterization of polymeric materials for drug delivery applications.

  • Perform statistical analysis of experimental data.
  • Document and summarize research findings effectively.

Required Qualifications & Skills:

Seeking candidates who have recently graduated with a B.S. or M.S. in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, or a related discipline; a minimum of 6 months of relevant experience (including co-op and internships) is preferred.

The ideal candidate will possess a research background in MEMS, microfabrication, and mechanical/electrical engineering, along with practical experience in rapid prototyping; however, training will be provided to enhance skills.

Candidates with experience in the following areas are encouraged to apply:

  • MEMS/NEMS device technology.
  • Microfabrication processes (photolithography, thin film deposition, wet and dry chemical etching).

  • Proficiency in CAD software (L-Edit, SolidWorks).
  • Experience in biomedical device design and development.
  • Knowledge of material characterization techniques (biomaterials and plastics, familiarity with Instron testing machines).

  • Experience with additive manufacturing/3D printing (FDM and SLA).
  • Understanding of plastic injection molding processes (extrusion, injection molding, and compression molding).
  • Background in drug delivery and pharmaceutical sciences.
  • Strong documentation skills and experience in writing standard operating procedures.
  • Familiarity with simulation software (COMSOL) is preferred.
  • Experience with Matlab/Arduino programming is a plus.

The candidate must demonstrate self-motivation and a willingness to learn new tools and techniques; possess strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills; and be capable of working independently as well as collaboratively within a team. A commitment to high standards and the production of accurate, high-quality work is essential, along with meticulous attention to detail and effective documentation practices. Adherence to safety protocols and maintaining a safe work environment is crucial.
