Position Overview

Hawk Link is in search of outstanding student leaders who are dedicated to assisting incoming students at KU. As integral members of the Hawk Link Success Team, these leaders will play a crucial role in guiding students toward achieving their academic and professional aspirations. They will serve as mentors, role models, and community builders.

The selected student leaders will participate in the Jayhawk JumpStart program, which is designed to facilitate a smooth transition for new students. This role requires attendance at a training week, followed by a series of events aimed at supporting incoming students.

Job Responsibilities

During the Jayhawk JumpStart program, student leaders will:

  • Facilitate connections among students and help them build friendships (25%)
  • Introduce college fundamentals, including expectations and connections with faculty (25%)
  • Guide students in understanding their values and how these relate to career paths (10%)
  • Provide insights into essential academic skills for success in college (10%)
  • Assist students in navigating KU technology resources (10%)
  • Promote well-being support and available services (10%)
  • Teach effective time management strategies, including balancing various commitments (10%)
Required Qualifications
  • Must be a full-time student in good academic standing as defined by KU
  • Must have completed at least sophomore-level coursework by the summer of 2024
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 at the time of application and throughout employment
  • Must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours during the semester of appointment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills
  • Experience presenting to diverse groups
  • Ability to connect effectively with students, faculty, and staff
  • Demonstrated responsibility, positive attitude, and teamwork skills
  • Willingness to learn about academic resources and policies
  • Experience overcoming challenges faced by first-generation and low-income students
