Peer Specialist

AltaPointe Health is seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Peer Specialist to join our Adult Residential Services team. As a Peer Specialist, you will play a vital role in providing social interaction, promoting recovery-oriented activities, and assisting consumers in developing advocacy skills.
Key Responsibilities- Provide social interaction, both individually and in groups, to develop social skills and help consumers gain insight into their mental illness.
- Promote recovery-oriented skills to help consumers achieve their treatment plan goals.
- Establish linkages that result in consumers actively using community resources.
- Assist consumers in developing empowerment skills through self-advocacy and advocate on their behalf when needed.
- Assist staff and consumers in understanding recovery and share unique experiences leading toward rehabilitation.
- Serve as a role model to help staff understand recovery and share unique experiences leading toward rehabilitation.
- Work with recreation staff to plan and implement recreational activities for consumers.
- Conduct community meetings with consumers in each assigned group home.
- Conduct peer support groups for adult day treatment programs.
- Document in a timely fashion per AltaPointe policy.
- Document legibly and in a clear and concise manner.
- Document individualized consumer responses to services provided.
- Seek supervision and consultation as needed.
- Accept and employ suggestions for improvement.
- Actively work to enhance skills.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings as required.
- Treat consumers with care, dignity, and compassion.
- Respect consumers' privacy and confidentiality.
- Be pleasant and cooperative with others.
- Assist consumers and visitors as needed.
- Personal values do not inhibit ability to relate and care for others.
- Be sensitive to consumers' needs, expectations, and individual differences.
- Be gentle and calm with consumers and families.
- Actively participate in Performance Improvement activities.
- Actively participate in AltaPointe committees as required.
- Complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.
- Follow AltaPointe policies and procedures.
- Attend appropriate in-services training and other workshops.
Frequent standing, sitting, and walking in bursts of 5 to 10 minutes. May involve pacing with consumers for extended periods. Ability to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally during a shift. Strong grasp needed to use keys to open doors. Pushing/pulling force up to 25 pounds occasionally during a shift.
Qualifications- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current or former recipient of mental health services for at least one year.
- Ability to identify as a consumer of mental health services and speak openly about personal diagnosis and treatment.
- Valid, verifiable driver's license, good driving record, reliable transportation, and verifiable vehicle liability insurance.
- Ability to attend out-of-town Peer Specialist training for certification.
- Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of the Alabama public mental health system.
- Knowledge of adult-specific competencies, outlined below, to be attained within six months of employment:
- Knowledge of psychiatric disorders in the adult population.
- Knowledge of cultural diversity.
- Knowledge of behavior management, crisis intervention, and interventions common to acute psychotic consumers, as well as non-violent crisis intervention practices.
- Knowledge of Psychiatric Rehabilitation principles.
- Knowledge of educational methods appropriate to adults with severe and persistent psychiatric disorders.
