About the Role

Vanderbilt University is seeking a highly skilled Grounds Operations Manager to join our Facilities department. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for the daily and strategic management of our Grounds Department, ensuring the delivery of exceptional services to our campus community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operational Management: Manage all day-to-day operational and administrative activities of the Grounds Maintenance Program, including workload, work orders, available resources, and work scheduling.
  • Strategic Planning: Plan, prioritize, and manage efficient and economical grounds maintenance and horticultural programs in accordance with the seasonal calendar and current weather conditions.
  • Cost Management: Identify and implement opportunities to reduce costs and increase efficiencies.
  • Landscape Management: Maintain a safe and attractive landscape across the university campus.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with stakeholders to scope, design, install, and maintain athletic turf fields, campus green spaces, landscape beds, drainage systems, plant materials, trees, mulch, hardscapes, parking lots and garages, roads, loading docks, waste collection areas, and outdoor waste receptacles throughout campus.
  • Event Support: Plan and oversee support services for programs, activities, and events for university, student, or outside groups.
  • Supply Chain Management: Manage various supplies, equipment, and building operations, including university vehicles and assigned program spaces.
  • Research and Development: Research, analyze, compare, and summarize grounds and landscape maintenance best practices.
  • Reporting and Analysis: Track, compile, and report data on the results of all program activities on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
  • Training and Development: Provide training to all Grounds' staff on topics such as safety, proper work techniques, chemical application, equipment operation, and other topics.
  • Supplier Management: Source products and services that support departmental activities and follow established purchasing procedures.
  • Communication: Establish and maintain positive working relationships with all areas and departments within the university and local community.
Leadership
  • Organizational Structure: Ensure a strong and resilient organizational structure through effective management of current staff and operations.
  • Staff Development: Evaluate, coach, and develop direct report staff regularly.
  • Team Leadership: Guide, teach, and lead all team members to ensure organizational effectiveness, professional interpersonal interactions, excellent communication, ownership, commitment, and teamwork.
Requirements
  • Education: A bachelor's degree from an accredited university is required.
  • Experience: At least 5 years of related experience leading university-level grounds maintenance operations is required.
  • Skills: Demonstrated effective communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills are required. Excellent organizational skills, record-keeping abilities, and attention to detail are also required.
