Job Overview:

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the guidance of the Plumber Crew Leader or Construction Supervisor, the incumbent is responsible for performing essential tasks that ensure the continuous provision of water and sewer services. This role involves both skilled and unskilled labor, utilizing hand and power tools, operating heavy machinery, and maintaining equipment. The individual is expected to demonstrate sound judgment, independence, initiative, and professional skills in daily operations. All tasks must comply with the safety protocols and operational regulations set forth by the City and Utility, as well as federal, state, and local laws.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

- Engaging with the public, city officials, and external agencies with professionalism and respect.

Communication Skills
  • Ability to read, write, and follow instructions accurately;
  • Assists in the training of new team members;
Operational Duties
  • Operates heavy vehicles and equipment such as trucks and front-end loaders;
  • Transports materials to and from job sites;
  • Prepares and finishes concrete and mortar;
  • Utilizes asphalt for road repairs;
  • Employs hand and power tools on a regular basis;
  • Operates cutting equipment as needed;
  • Assists in valve operations;
  • Installs and repairs water infrastructure including services, hydrants, mains, and valves;
  • Installs and repairs sewer infrastructure including lateral connections, mains, and manholes;
  • Supports colleagues across various classifications;
  • Excavates, shores, and backfills for maintenance and installation of water and sewer lines;
EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE
  • Conducts daily inspections of assigned vehicles and reports findings to supervisors;
  • Maintains vehicles, tools, and work areas in a clean and orderly manner;
  • Reports any irregularities in equipment to supervisors;
  • Responsible for refueling equipment as necessary;
  • Ensures availability of required materials and tools for tasks;
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
  • Assists in training other employees;
  • Performs general maintenance tasks as assigned;
  • Engages in similar or less skilled work as needed;
  • Completes other duties as assigned.
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

The incumbent is responsible for managing their performance in alignment with this job description and the expectations set by management. If clarification is needed regarding roles or responsibilities, it is the incumbent's duty to consult their job description and seek guidance from their supervisor. Management will assist in ensuring that performance expectations are clearly communicated and met.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does not entail supervisory responsibilities; however, the incumbent may assist in training new employees and support lower-level personnel.

QUALIFICATIONS

To succeed in this role, an individual must be capable of performing each essential duty satisfactorily. The following qualifications are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required:

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or equivalent with relevant advanced training;
  • Preferred three years of construction or related experience;
  • Ability to read, write, and follow instructions;
  • Understanding of work processes and equipment usage;
  • Proficiency in Windows and iOS software;
  • Experience with work order management and GIS software on mobile devices;
  • Familiarity with gas monitoring equipment;
  • Ability to complete fall protection training.
LANGUAGE SKILLS

The incumbent will regularly interact with co-workers and occasionally with the public. Must possess the ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals. The employee should be able to write routine reports and communicate effectively with groups.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to perform basic mathematical operations and interpret data.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense to follow instructions and solve problems.

CERTIFICATIONS
  • Valid driver's license;
  • New hires must obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within a specified timeframe;
  • Trenching and excavation certification will be provided;
  • Must pass a physical for Respirator or Confined Space.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands of this position require regular sitting, standing, walking, and lifting up to 50 pounds. The work involves significant physical effort and may require working in confined spaces while using safety equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Employees may encounter various environmental conditions, including exposure to extreme weather, noise, and moving machinery while performing their duties.
