Job Summary

As a Sterile Processing Manager at Kaiser Permanente, you will oversee the services and departments responsible for providing patient care equipment and surgical instrumentation reprocessing functions. This includes collection, decontamination, assembly, sterilization, high-level disinfection, and distribution. You will also manage the surgical instrument inventory and supplies, ensuring departmental activities are supported.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise SPD technicians and staff to achieve operational performance and quality goals
  • Manage all aspects of sterile processing, including collection, decontamination, assembly, sterilization, high-level disinfection, distribution, and inventory management
  • Maintain continued education and proficiency in Sterile Processing operations and equipment
  • Serve as a technical expert regarding product reprocessing, decontamination, and sterilization
  • Ensure optimal sterile processing performance through quality control and quality assurance
  • Monitor and report equipment operational status
  • Recommend equipment changes, upgrades, and additions to meet manufacturers' instructions for use
  • Facilitate the recruitment and selection of department staff
  • Provide ongoing feedback and document staff performance
  • Develop a comprehensive departmental orientation for new staff
  • Coordinate training and competency validation for all staff
  • Ensure staff work is performed within prescribed technical and safety standards
  • Provide or coordinate instructions and in-service on new products, procedures, and equipment
  • Ensure staff attend technical and mandatory training/education
  • Schedule staff and work to ensure cases have instruments and equipment when needed
  • Monitor and adhere to labor and expense budgets
  • Maintain reports in appropriate cycles for department performance and staff attendance
  • Develop and submit department budget to the Director of Perioperative Services
Requirements
  • Minimum three years of experience in an acute or ambulatory-care sterile processing department
  • Minimum one year of supervisory experience
  • Minimum one year of experience in preparing for local, state, and/or federal survey and/or The Joint Commission
  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Manufacturing, Health Care Administration, Public Health, Health Sciences; or five years of experience in an acute or ambulatory care sterile processing department and two years of supervisory experience
  • Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution - Technician Certification or Registered Central Service Technician Certificate
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification in Leadership Certification (CHL)
  • Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS)
  • Five years of experience in an acute-care sterile processing department
  • Three years of progressive supervisory experience
  • One year or more supervisory experience in a union environment
