Role Summary
The City of Roanoke, Virginia is in search of a dedicated Accountant responsible for the management of financial documentation, focusing on financial reporting, contractual obligations, and accounts receivable. Key responsibilities encompass compiling and interpreting financial data essential for generating intricate financial statements; executing journal entries, financial reports, and confirming the accuracy of financial information; as well as conducting reconciliations and preparing detailed analyses of account variations and budget discrepancies. The ideal candidate will compile statistical and accounting data upon request, support external auditors as necessary, assist various departments with financial inquiries, and prepare financial or budgetary reports as required. Furthermore, they will provide guidance and support in the operational aspects of municipal business sectors and implement systematic collection efforts for overdue accounts. A Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related discipline from an accredited institution is required, along with three to five years of relevant experience in accounting, preferably within the public sector, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Certification as a Public Accountant is preferred.

Key Responsibilities
PRIMARY DUTIES
Maintain financial records with a primary focus on financial reporting, contracts, and asset accounting.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include but are not limited to:
- Execute assigned accounting tasks in compliance with GAAP and relevant Federal and State regulations for designated responsibilities and accounts.
- Compile and analyze financial data for the preparation of complex financial reports.
- Manage specialized databases, investigate, and recommend upgrades or modifications to departmental information management systems and procedures.
- Prepare journal entries, financial statements, and reports while ensuring data accuracy and timeliness.
- Assemble statistical and accounting data as requested.
- Assist external auditors as needed.
- Provide financial information support to other departments.
- Research and supply financial data upon request.
- Conduct reconciliations and prepare written analyses of account fluctuations and budget variances.
- Generate budgetary and/or financial reports.
- Offer oversight and assistance in the operations of municipal business areas.
- Implement systematic collection actions for overdue accounts.
SUPERVISORY ROLE
This position does not include supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
A Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field from an accredited institution; three to five years of relevant experience in accounting, preferably in the public sector; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Certification as a Public Accountant is preferred.
Skills and Abilities
LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports and governmental regulations. Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints effectively in both oral and written forms.
MATHEMATICAL ABILITY
Proficiency in working with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
REASONING SKILLS
Ability to solve practical problems and address a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization. Ability to interpret various instructions provided in written or oral formats.
