Chief Engineer for Transportation Planning and Management

Job Summary
The City of New York is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Chief Engineer for Transportation Planning and Management to lead the Design & Construction (D&C) unit within the Transportation Planning and Management (TPM) division. This role is responsible for overseeing the design and upkeep of New York City's streets, including developing, reviewing, and approving street design plans for NYCDOT and outside entities.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the D&C unit and its 80+ staff for TPM, including functions related to developing, reviewing, and approving street design plans for NYCDOT and outside entities.
- Provide engineering review and expertise on complex issues.
- Improve D&C's quality, efficiency, productivity, timeliness, collaboration, transparency, and professional desirability as a workplace.
- Support and evolve quality standards and simple access for Legal and Construction of official records for pavement markings, highway signs, and legal justifications of engineering decisions.
- Manage implementation of markings and other street design changes, including contractor oversight, material specifications evolution, inspection protocols, contract structure, data management, communication for work order management, scoping & payment, traffic control evolution, and work/inspection safety.
- Collaborate closely with TPM's planning units around issues like Vision Zero street safety, expanded pedestrian space, bicycle facilities, bus priority, freight mobility, and other related subjects.
Requirements
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in engineering, engineering technology, architecture, landscape architecture, architectural technology, construction, construction management, construction technology, sustainable design, urban planning, urban studies, city planning, transportation planning, business administration, or public administration.
- Five years of full-time satisfactory experience in the planning, administering, or expediting of engineering design, and/or construction, or coordinating a very large engineering project, two years of which must have been in an administrative, managerial, executive, or supervisory capacity.
