Job Summary

The Histology Technician I role at ThedaCare is a key position in our laboratory team. We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented individual to prepare tissue sections for microscopic study and interpretation by our pathologists.

This is a Monday to Friday, day shift position with varying start times between 7am and 10am. Every 10th week, you will work a pm shift and be on rotating weekend and holiday on-call duty.

As a Histology Technician I, you will be responsible for ensuring specimens are properly accessioned, labeled, and suitable for testing. You will also embed tissue into paraffin blocks, cut quality tissue sections to the proper thickness, and perform routine and special stains, immunohistochemistry, cover slipping, verification, and distribution of slides.

You will work closely with our pathologists during frozen section procedures and ensure compliance with all accrediting agency standards.

We are looking for a candidate with a current Histotechnician (HT) certification issued by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC) or 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours in biology and chemistry.

The ideal candidate will have one year of full-time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory in the U.S., Canada, or an accredited laboratory within the last five years and Histotechnician (HT) certification issued by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC) obtained within one year of employment.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Ensures specimens are properly accessioned, labeled, and suitable for testing.
  • Embeds tissue into paraffin blocks.
  • Cuts quality tissue sections to proper thickness as determined by tissue type, and places sample on glass slides.
  • Performs routine and special stains, immunohistochemistry, cover slipping, verification, and distribution of slides.
  • Performs and documents quality control. Evaluates quality control results and takes corrective action under the guidance of team leader or supervisor.
  • Performs and documents cleaning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of instruments and equipment.
  • Assists pathologists during frozen section procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with all accrediting agency standards.

Qualifications:

  • A current Histotechnician (HT) certification issued by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC) or 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours in biology and chemistry.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to move freely (standing, stooping, walking, bending, pushing, and pulling) and lift up to a maximum of twenty-five (25) pounds without assistance.

Work Environment:

  • Works in a medical setting with high risk of exposure to blood and body fluids, chemicals, and biohazardous materials.
