About ThedaCare

Summary :
Position is M-F days primary with varying start times between 0500-0730. Position works a pm shift (1200-2000) every 10th week. Rotating weekend and holiday on-call (every 10th week).

The Histology Technician I prepares tissue sections from surgical material for microscopic study and interpretation by the pathologist.

Job Description:

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Ensures specimens are properly accessioned, labeled, and suitable for testing. Embeds tissue into paraffin blocks.
  • Cuts quality tissue sections to proper thickness as determined by tissue type, and places sample on glass slides.
  • Performs routine and special stains, immunohistochemistry, cover slipping, verification, and distribution of slides.
  • Performs and documents quality control. Evaluates quality control results and takes corrective action under the guidance of team leader or supervisor.
  • Performs and documents cleaning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of instruments and equipment.
  • Assists pathologists during frozen section procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with all accrediting agency standards.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A current Histotechnician (HT) certification issued by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC) or 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), OR an associate degree from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the associate degree, AND one year of full time acceptable experience in a histopathology (clinical, veterinary, industry or research) laboratory in the U.S., Canada or an accredited laboratory within the last five years and Histotechnician (HT) certification issued by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC) obtained within one year of employment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Ability to move freely (standing, stooping, walking, bending, pushing, and pulling) and lift up to a maximum of twenty-five (25) pounds without assistance
  • Job classification is exposed to blood borne pathogens (blood or bodily fluids) while performing job duties
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Works in a medical setting with high risk of exposure to blood and body fluids, chemicals, and biohazardous materials • Frequent exposure to sharp objects and instruments
  • Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock
  • Use of computers throughout the work day
  • Frequent use of keyboard with repetitive motion of hands, wrists, and fingers
