Job Summary:

The University Hospital, Newark NJ is seeking a highly skilled Inpatient Coding Data Quality Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our coding department, you will be responsible for ensuring the consistent processing of claims and collection of data to optimize DRG reimbursement and produce quality data that accurately reflects the severity and intensity of hospital inpatient services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Audit inpatient coded records to ensure accuracy and compliance with coding guidelines
  • Provide continuing education to inpatient coding staff on coding best practices and industry developments
  • Facilitate the inpatient coding workflow to ensure efficient and accurate coding processes
  • Collaborate with coding staff to resolve coding queries and discrepancies
  • Stay up-to-date with industry developments, coding guidelines, and regulatory requirements

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Health Information Management or a related field
  • RHIA or RHIT certification preferred
  • CCS certification required
  • Minimum of three years of hospital inpatient coding experience in ICD-9 and ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure coding and DRG assignment
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology, disease processes, Coding Clinic, POA, query guidelines
  • Knowledge of CMS, Medicaid, and third-party payer coding, billing, and compliance regulations
  • Experience with encoder software and electronic health records
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a tertiary care, teaching environment with complex surgical, transplant, trauma, neurosurgery, Ob/Gyn, and neonatology services
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Excel, Outlook, and shared files
