POSITION SUMMARY
This role is a skilled, full-time exempt position under the direct supervision of the Police Sergeant or Lieutenant. The individual in this position is responsible for safeguarding the community by preventing criminal activity, enforcing laws, apprehending suspects, and monitoring traffic conditions.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The officer must be physically capable of operating various equipment, including a motor vehicle, computer, and communication devices. The role requires the ability to lift and carry heavy objects, exerting more than one hundred pounds of force occasionally and up to fifty pounds frequently. The physical demands align with those typical of very heavy work.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties are illustrative of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar or logically assigned to this classification.
- Supervise, direct, and evaluate assigned personnel; assign tasks and provide guidance.
- Enforce all applicable City and State codes, ordinances, laws, and regulations to protect life and property, prevent crime, and enhance security.
- Patrol designated areas by vehicle or on foot, ensuring a visible police presence to deter law violations.
- Prevent and detect criminal activity; apprehend offenders; issue citations and make arrests as warranted.
- Respond to calls and complaints regarding accidents, misdemeanors, and felonies.
- Conduct investigations into accidents and crimes; gather evidence, interview witnesses and suspects, and prepare detailed reports.
- Intervene in disturbances and mediate disputes.
- Administer first aid when necessary.
- Enforce parking and traffic laws, utilizing radar equipment to monitor speed in high-incident areas.
- Establish traffic control and provide police protection at events; perform duties at parades and other public gatherings.
- Inspect unoccupied buildings for suspicious activity and report safety hazards.
- Assist motorists as needed.
- Communicate effectively with staff and the public to gather information and resolve issues.
- Prepare reports, maintain logs, and perform clerical duties as required.
- Attend training sessions to stay informed about departmental operations and legal updates.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
Applicants must possess the following:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of testing.
- Valid, unrestricted driver's license.
- U.S. citizenship.
POST Certified candidates will undergo an oral interview, background check, medical examination, psychological evaluation, and deception test.
DISQUALIFICATIONS
Disqualifying factors include, but are not limited to:
- Felony convictions or guilty pleas.
- Crimes involving moral turpitude.
- Violations related to force, violence, theft, or controlled substances.
- Domestic violence-related offenses.
- Outstanding child support or student loan obligations.
- DUI convictions or requirements for interlock devices.
- Dishonorable discharge from military service.
- Inappropriate tattoos, particularly on the face or neck.
