Desert Regional Medical Center is a prominent 385-bed acute-care facility recognized as a stroke receiving center and a level 2 trauma center, featuring a progressive, patient-focused Rehabilitation Services Department. Our dedicated team offers a comprehensive array of inpatient and outpatient services, including acute care rehabilitation, joint replacement and spinal surgery, neurosurgery, ICU, telemetry, step-down care, skilled nursing, and outpatient therapy, including hand and lymphedema clinics.

Position Overview:

The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) serves as a perioperative nurse, assisting the surgeon during surgical interventions in the operating room. The RNFA executes first assistant duties in accordance with established hospital protocols. In addition to first assisting, responsibilities may encompass circulating, scrubbing, and other assigned tasks.

Department-Specific Responsibilities:

  • Exhibits proficiency in all RNFA responsibilities pertinent to Cardiothoracic surgery.
  • Timely submission of annual performance evaluations by physicians.
  • Demonstrates capability to undertake additional roles in the Cardiac OR, including circulating and scrubbing.
  • Accurately prepares case carts as required.
  • Maintains clinical expertise by participating in surgical procedures.
  • Engages in the call rotation.
  • Contributes to preoperative assessments and planning for designated surgical patients.
  • Identifies safety risks and implements suitable preventative and corrective measures.
  • Facilitates exposure through appropriate instrument use, including retractors, suctioning, and sponging.
  • Collaborates with the surgeon in handling and dissecting tissues.
  • Assists in clamping blood vessels, coagulating bleeding points, ligating vessels, and performing other surgical tasks alongside the surgeon.
  • Participates in suturing muscle, fascia, subcutaneous, and skin tissue in collaboration with the surgeon.
  • Places drains as surgically indicated.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program with a current California RN license.
  • Certification as a perioperative nurse (CNOR) is mandatory.
  • Completion of an accredited RNFA program, including the requisite internship hours.
  • 2-3 years of substantial experience as a CVOR Surgical Technician.
  • Proficient in perioperative nursing practices as both scrub and circulating nurse with diverse operating room experience.
  • Current American Heart Association BLS Certification (must remain current).
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification (must remain current).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with individuals at all levels and maintain positive relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Exhibits active listening skills.
  • Demonstrates a solid understanding of contemporary nursing theory and practice.
  • Compassionate and non-judgmental patient caregiver and advocate.
  • Ability to endure physically and mentally demanding work conditions.
  • Possesses necessary auditory, visual, and manual acuity for ensuring patient safety.
  • Completion of mandatory training programs to comply with TJC standards is required.

Compensation: $83.35 per hour. Individual salaries are determined based on various factors, including qualifications and experience.
