Desert Regional Medical Center is a 385-bed acute-care facility recognized as a stroke receiving center and a level 2 trauma institution, featuring a progressive, patient-focused Rehabilitation Services Department. Position Overview:

The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) serves as a perioperative nurse who assists the surgeon during surgical interventions in the operating room. The RNFA executes first assistant duties in accordance with established hospital protocols. In addition to first assisting, responsibilities may encompass circulating, scrubbing, and other assigned tasks.

Department Responsibilities:

  • Exhibits proficiency in performing all RNFA tasks specific to Cardiothoracic surgery.
  • Submits annual performance evaluations by physicians promptly.
  • Demonstrates capability to undertake additional roles in the Cardiac OR, including circulating and scrubbing.
  • Effectively pulls case carts with accuracy.
  • Maintains clinical proficiency by participating in surgical procedures.
  • Engages in the call rotation as required.
  • Participates in preoperative evaluations and planning for selected surgical patients.
  • Identifies safety risks and initiates suitable preventative and corrective measures.
  • Provides exposure through appropriate instrument handling, retraction, suctioning, and sponging.
  • Collaborates with the surgeon in tissue handling and dissection.
  • Assists in clamping blood vessels, coagulating bleeding points, ligating vessels, and performing other procedures in conjunction with the surgeon.
  • Facilitates suturing of muscle, fascia, subcutaneous, and skin tissue in collaboration with the surgeon.
  • Places drains as surgically indicated.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program with a valid California RN license.
  • Certification as a perioperative nurse (CNOR) is mandatory.
  • Completion of an accredited RNFA program, including the requisite internship hours.
  • 2-3 years of substantial experience as a CVOR Surgical Technician.
  • Proficient in perioperative nursing practices as both scrub and circulating nurse with diverse operating room experience.
  • Current American Heart Association BLS Certification (must remain current).
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification (must remain current).
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to interact with individuals at all levels and maintain positive relationships with patients, families, and colleagues across departments.
  • Possesses active listening abilities.
  • Demonstrates understanding of contemporary nursing theories and practices.
  • Compassionate, non-judgmental patient caregiver and advocate.
  • Ability to endure physically and mentally demanding work conditions.
  • Exhibits necessary auditory, visual, and manual acuity for ensuring patient safety.
  • Completion of mandatory training programs to comply with TJC standards is required.

Compensation: $83.35 per hour. Individual salaries are determined based on various factors, including qualifications and experience.
