Job Overview

Position: Crew Leader - Streets/Asphalt

Salary Range: $61,247 - $104,121

Work Environment: On-site

The Crew Leader for Streets/Asphalt is responsible for overseeing a team of Laborers and Equipment Operators engaged in the maintenance and repair of asphalt surfaces. This role involves assigning tasks, inspecting work quality, and evaluating the performance of team members across various assignments. Collaboration with the Senior Crew Leader is essential to ensure that work areas are clearly defined and that standards are met consistently.

Department Overview:

The Department of Public Works plays a vital role in enhancing the livability and sustainability of the City of Falls Church. Our mission includes planning, constructing, operating, and maintaining essential transportation systems and infrastructure that enhance mobility and deliver core public services to residents and businesses.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the construction, repair, and maintenance of street surfaces;
  • Monitor the condition of curbs, gutters, driveways, bike paths, and barriers;
  • Manage the removal of debris from natural and artificial drainage systems;
  • Ensure the proper functioning and maintenance of various heavy equipment, including dump trucks and snow removal vehicles;
  • Supervise the collection and disposal of waste from public areas;
  • Lead a team for leaf collection and snow/ice removal operations;
  • Step in to operate equipment when necessary;
  • Prioritize safety for team members and the public by implementing safe work practices;
  • Accurately assess material needs for projects and place orders as required;
  • Document daily and weekly activities in clear reports;
  • Provide training and guidance to Laborers and Equipment Operators;
  • Evaluate the performance of supervised employees;
  • Act in the capacity of Senior Crew Leader when needed;
  • Follow and enforce written and verbal directives;
  • Interpret construction plans and specifications;
  • Promote safety and proper equipment operation among staff;
  • Plan and coordinate daily operations, including staff management;
  • Review project plans to ensure compliance with standards and collaborate with contractors for necessary adjustments;
  • Gather data for budget preparation and monitor financial expenditures;
  • Serve as a liaison between city officials and contractors;
  • Coordinate professional services with contractors and other departments;
  • Organize work tasks and provide technical support for maintenance and emergency operations;
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum requirements include a High School Diploma or GED, along with three years of supervisory or equipment operation experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licensing:

A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required, with appropriate endorsements obtained within six months of employment.

Work Conditions:

Willingness to work in adverse weather conditions, including weekends and holidays, is essential.

Essential Skills:

  • In-depth knowledge of maintenance and repair processes;
  • Ability to effectively supervise and assess the work of others;
  • Capability to train and motivate team members in safe work practices;
  • Proficiency in following instructions and reading construction plans;
  • Physical stamina to perform tasks in challenging weather;
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

Work Schedule: This is a full-time position, operating Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Compensation and Benefits: The expected salary for this position starts at $75,362.00, commensurate with qualifications. The City offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health and dental insurance, pension plans, flexible spending accounts, and paid time off.
