We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Building Official Manager to lead the Building Division of the City of Jefferson, MO. As a key member of the Planning and Protective Services Department, this position will be responsible for directing the operations of the division, including building inspection and enforcement of state laws, codes, and local ordinances.
Key Responsibilities- Manage and direct the activities and operations of the division, including building inspection and enforcement of state laws, codes, and local ordinances.
- Function as the Building Official for the City and administer, interpret, communicate, and enforce municipal ordinances and adopted codes and standards pertaining to the construction of the built environment in the City of Jefferson.
- Direct day-to-day operations of personnel engaged in providing inspection, regulatory, and code enforcement services related to all phases of building and housing construction, electrical, plumbing, fire, and safety protections, and heating installations.
- Provide and monitor staff development to ensure appropriate expertise and experience within the division.
- Review building plans and inspect residential, commercial, and industrial buildings to ensure that construction, alteration, and maintenance work complies with code and is constructed according to approved plans.
- Provide exceptional customer service while communicating with contractors, builders, developers, and citizens during the plan approval and inspection processes.
- Provide staff support and assistance to boards and commissions as required.
- Attend meetings, training, and conferences, interact with outside agencies and commissions, and provide leadership for teams or committees as needed.
- A bachelor's degree in construction science, construction management, architecture, engineering, or a related area.
- At least five years of professional work experience related to building design and construction, code review or enforcement, with at least two years of supervisory and management-level experience.
- Must have a valid Missouri driver's license.
- Must have a cell phone.
- Must obtain the ICC Certified Building Official certification within one year of hire.
- Thorough knowledge of modern developments, current literature, and sources of information in the field of municipal building inspection and code enforcement.
- Thorough knowledge of all major types of building construction, materials, and equipment, and of related municipal building, zoning, and related codes and ordinances.
- Ability to use a personal computer and related software, with preferred experience using SmartGov or other permitting software.
