Position Overview

The Metropolitan Public Defender Service Inc. has been a pioneer in the realm of public defense since its establishment. As a non-profit legal entity, we provide essential defense services under contract with the State of Oregon. We are recognized as the foremost public defender organization in this system and the largest provider of trial-level public defense services in Oregon.

We are currently seeking a dedicated Legal Assistant II to enhance our Multnomah County Office. This role is primarily focused on delivering exceptional administrative support to our defense team. The Legal Assistant serves as a crucial link between clients, attorneys, families, and various components of the criminal justice system. Responsibilities include assessing client needs, making appropriate referrals to Alternatives Advocates, and coordinating necessary services. A solid understanding of the organization's operations is essential for this position.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide administrative support to the defense team.
  • Act as a liaison among clients, attorneys, and the criminal justice system.
  • Evaluate client needs and refer them to appropriate resources.
  • Coordinate essential services for clients.

Compensation: The annual salary for this position is $65,991.00. This is a full-time, limited duration (one-year) non-exempt role. Staff members are part of a union and enjoy a comprehensive benefits package that includes:

  • Paid Time Off (PTO) starting at 24 hours upon hire, accruing monthly to 80 hours, and increasing to 120 hours after 24 months.

  • 4 Mental Health Days annually.
  • Sick Leave – 48 hours upon hire, with additional accruals after six months and annually thereafter.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience or education in the legal or social service field.
  • Typing proficiency of at least 35 words per minute with 100% accuracy.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Skills:

  • Leadership abilities in managing work assignments and interactions with staff and justice system personnel.
  • Capability to access clients and witnesses in correctional facilities.
  • Ability to testify in court without disqualification.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality of agency records.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Fluency in Spanish is highly preferred.

Work Environment:
