POSITION SUMMARY

Placer County Library is looking to hire a full-time Library Clerk for our Auburn branch.

As a Library Clerk, your responsibilities will include performing circulation tasks such as checking materials in and out, issuing library cards, and managing fines. You will also shelve materials, assist patrons with library services, and respond to inquiries both in person and via phone. We are dedicated to providing exceptional customer service and engaging with the community.

The library operates seven days a week, with some locations open until 6 PM, so availability for weekends and evenings is essential.

The eligible list created from this recruitment may be utilized for future openings for both temporary and permanent positions.

ROLE DESCRIPTION

The Library Clerk performs a variety of clerical functions related to library operations and assists the public in locating and checking out library materials.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties may be included, but are not limited to:
  • Conduct circulation activities, including checking materials in and out, registering patrons, calculating and collecting fines, and explaining library policies.
  • Shelve library materials and ensure proper order on shelves.
  • Process and prepare new materials for circulation following established protocols.
  • Collect and record payments for overdue, lost, or damaged items.
  • Assist patrons in utilizing library services and understanding the arrangement of materials.
  • Respond to inquiries via phone and in person, utilizing available indexes and catalog systems.
  • Process routine inter-library loan requests.
  • Support the maintenance of the library collection, including weeding outdated materials and performing repairs.
  • Monitor the condition of materials and perform necessary binding and repairs.
  • Maintain records and compile statistics on library services and activities.
  • Perform general clerical tasks and operate library-related office equipment.
  • Ensure library and public areas are orderly and clean.
  • Assist in setting up displays as directed.
  • Conduct special activities such as story hours and outreach functions.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with colleagues and the public through excellent customer service.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants should demonstrate how they meet the minimum qualifications listed below.

Experience and Training

Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

Experience: No prior library experience is necessary. Experience in a service or sales role with frequent public contact is desirable.

Training: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

Required License or Certificate:
May need to possess a valid driver's license as required by the position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Office methods, practices, and equipment.

  • Perform physical tasks related to shelving and handling materials.
SELECTION PROCESS
