Position Summary
The Heavy Equipment Technician is responsible for the repair and maintenance of various construction machinery and mechanical systems, including trucks, trailers, bulldozers, excavators, and more, specifically within a Radiological Contaminated Area.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnoses mechanical issues and performs cost-effective repairs.
- Dismantles machinery to access and replace faulty components using hand tools and hoists.
- Conducts maintenance and repairs on heavy machinery, trucks, and shop equipment across the organization.
- Performs routine vehicle servicing, including oil changes, lubrication, fluid replacements, and filter changes, while adhering to preventative maintenance schedules.
- Orders necessary parts and supplies, maintaining accurate purchase orders and invoices.
- Adjusts and repairs functional components and control instruments.
- Tests machinery performance after repairs.
- Welds and fabricates parts as needed.
- Ensures a clean and organized workspace.
To excel in this role, candidates must demonstrate the ability to perform essential duties effectively. The following qualifications are essential:
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience as a skilled mechanic, particularly with heavy-duty construction equipment such as Komatsu and CAT machinery.
- Ability to read and interpret safety regulations, maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals.
- Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration.
- Proficient in basic mathematical operations.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions accurately.
- Competence in typing and using computer systems for job-related tasks.
- Must qualify as a DOE Rad Worker II and complete 40 Hr OSHA HAZWOPER training.
- Pass a pre-employment HAZWOPER physical examination.
- Possession of a valid driver's license.

The physical demands of this position include:
- Ability to grip with a force of at least 75 lbs.
- Climbing on and around equipment.
- Lifting heavy and awkward components up to 50 lbs.
- Working in various positions, including sitting and kneeling.
- Maintaining balance on uneven surfaces.
- Vision corrected to 20/40 for safety awareness.
- Hearing corrected to understand verbal safety instructions.
This role is primarily conducted in a radiological contaminated area, requiring the use of personal protective equipment. The work schedule typically involves Monday through Thursday, with 10-hour shifts. Employees may encounter varying weather conditions and noise levels.
