Position Overview

The Commonwealth of Virginia is inviting applications for full-time judicial clerkships, designed for a term basis. Selected candidates will engage in their clerkship within Virginia, under the supervision of the respective Judge's chambers. Some travel within Virginia may be necessary.

Key Responsibilities

As a Legal Research Associate, your primary duties will include:

  • Drafting comprehensive memoranda and other written materials for Court Judges, which involves analyzing and summarizing legal briefs and case documents, including transcripts, pleadings, and exhibits.
  • Formulating Court orders and judicial opinions.
  • Verifying citations and conducting quote-checks on briefs, pleadings, and Court documents.
  • Collaborating effectively with fellow clerks and Court personnel, including Judges, to facilitate case resolutions.

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Graduation from an ABA-accredited law school or active membership in good standing with the bar of the Supreme Court of Virginia or the highest court of another state.
  • Proficient understanding of trial and appellate court procedures, systems, and regulations applicable in Virginia.
  • Exceptional skills in legal research.
  • Outstanding analytical and writing capabilities.
  • Ability to manage a high-volume workload while adhering to critical deadlines and promptly addressing urgent matters.
  • Experience with law review or similar journals is preferred.
  • Demonstrated history of academic and/or professional success.
  • U.S. citizenship or permanent legal residency is required, along with a criminal background check prior to employment offer.
