Position Overview

Columbia Technology Ventures serves as the technology transfer office for Columbia University, acting as a pivotal hub for numerous technology development initiatives, entrepreneurial ventures, external industry partnerships, and commercially-focused multidisciplinary technology innovations throughout the university. The primary mission of CTV is to facilitate the transition of inventions from academic research environments to the marketplace, benefiting society on local, national, and global scales. Each year, CTV oversees over 350 invention disclosures, 100 licensing agreements, and 20 new IP-backed startups, engaging more than 750 inventors across Columbia's campuses.

Throughout its history, CTV has successfully launched over 200 companies based on Columbia's innovations and has initiated several technology programs aimed at expediting the market entry of promising technologies. CTV collaborates closely with industry partners to foster collaborations and funding opportunities for translational research in the life sciences. Supported by a dedicated team of 45 full-time staff and over 30 graduate student interns (CTV Fellows), CTV provides extensive support to the Columbia community and other stakeholders. Additionally, CTV hosts an Executive-in-Residence program, inviting seasoned industry professionals, serial entrepreneurs, and investors to campus to assist faculty and student entrepreneurial endeavors.

The Columbia Lab-to-Market (L2M) Accelerator Network serves as a structured framework for effectively developing, launching, and executing initiatives that aid in the commercialization of academic research. Since its inception, Columbia University has established or co-founded multiple accelerator programs across various fields, including medical technologies, clean energy, advanced materials, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and digital media technologies, providing substantial funding to early-stage deep-tech teams. L2M offers essential infrastructure and resources to programs that support early-stage university teams in advancing their technologies.

L2M plays a vital role in facilitating the transition of scientific research from laboratories to the marketplace. The accelerators have achieved remarkable results, including over 1000 applications received, 672 teams participating in educational boot camps focused on product development and entrepreneurship, and over 356 cash awards totaling significant funding, with substantial external follow-on funding raised by these teams. In executing its programs and vision, L2M collaborates with various stakeholders across academic, corporate, investor, and public sectors. L2M is expanding its team to enhance its capacity to manage existing programs and onboard new initiatives, providing valuable hands-on educational experiences for students from Columbia University and Barnard College.
