Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Maintenance Specialist III to join our Public Works team in Blacksburg, VA. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for operating a variety of heavy equipment to install, maintain, and repair water and sewer systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate heavy equipment, including backhoes, excavators, and skid-steer loaders, to perform maintenance and repairs on water and sewer systems.
  • Perform manual labor for water and sewer main installations and water meter maintenance.
  • Remove snow as required and install and maintain fire hydrants.
  • Perform maintenance on heavy equipment and serve as a supervisor in the absence of the Foreman.
  • Be on call for after-hours emergencies.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Moderate experience in heavy equipment operation and maintenance, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • VDOT Flagger Certification within six months.
  • Valid commercial driver's license with Class A endorsement in the Commonwealth of Virginia, or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
  • Trench and Confined Space training within six months.
Physical Demands
  • Regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force, and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force.
  • Work requires standing, sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, and lifting.
  • Work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision, and peripheral vision.
Working Conditions
  • Work is generally in a very loud noise location.
  • Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, vibration, and extreme heat.
  • Exposure to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and bloodborne pathogens.
