Position Overview

The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) serves as a perioperative nurse collaborating with surgeons and healthcare teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes through the application of advanced knowledge, judgment, and skills specific to the RNFA role. The RNFA performs refined perioperative nursing practices and executes delegated medical functions within the nursing process.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assists the surgical team in preparing the patient, including but not limited to: Foley catheter placement, tourniquet application, intravenous catheter placement, cricoid pressure application, and other necessary procedures.
  • Intraoperative - The RNFA carries out specific tasks based on individual surgeon preferences using appropriate techniques, including incision and layered closure of surgical sites, providing exposure, achieving hemostasis through various methods, tissue manipulation and dissection, and applying suitable dressing materials.
  • Postoperative - The RNFA applies specialized dressing materials such as splints or casts, assesses skin integrity, assists in patient transfer, and follows the patient to recovery as directed by the surgeon.
  • Specialty Procedures - The RNFA, with appropriate training, performs additional procedures under surgeon supervision, including vein and graft harvesting and preparation.
  • Utilizes theoretical knowledge of asepsis, wound healing, infectious disease processes, surgical anatomy and physiology, safety issues, and operative techniques relevant to surgical procedures.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program. BSN or MSN or specialty certification preferred.
  • Completion of an RNFA program equivalent to one academic year of formal, post-basic nursing education meeting AORN standards.

Licensure/Certification:

  • Valid RN license in Indiana.
  • Certification in perioperative nursing (CNOR).
  • RNFA Certification within two years of completing the RNFA program or two years from notification for current RNFAs.

Experience:

A minimum of two years' experience as an RN in surgical settings.
