Job Description

Job Summary:

The Conservation Corps of Long Beach is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Construction Training and Safety Specialist to lead and mentor young adults in a YouthBuild program. The ideal candidate will have expertise in construction skills, workplace safety, and the ability to deliver both hands-on and classroom-based learning.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Construction Training:
    • Deliver NCCER core curriculum, ensuring that participants acquire the necessary technical skills and knowledge in construction.
    • Provide instruction in basic construction techniques, including carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical work, and more.
    • Teach and ensure mastery of Construction Math, including basic arithmetic, measurement, geometry, fractions, area, volume, and material estimations, with practical applications in construction projects.
    • Assess and evaluate students' progress, providing feedback and adjusting training techniques to meet learning needs.
    • Maintain accurate records of training, including attendance, assessments, and certifications.
    • Prepare students for NCCER certification exams.
  • Youth Development and Mentoring:
    • Provide mentorship to YouthBuild participants, encouraging positive behaviors, leadership skills, and professional development.
    • Support participants in overcoming barriers to success, offering guidance in life skills, career readiness, and goal setting.
    • Foster a positive learning environment that promotes teamwork, safety, and respect.
    • Collaborate with the Director of Corpsmember Development to ensure that participants are the right fit for the program by assessing their readiness, commitment, and overall suitability.
    • Contribute to the recruitment and selection process by providing insights on the physical, mental, and emotional demands of the program.
  • Mental Toughness Program Development:
    • Assist in the design and delivery of a two-week Mental Toughness Program aimed at preparing participants for the physical and mental challenges of the YouthBuild program.
    • Develop exercises, activities, and lessons that focus on building resilience, teamwork, and mental endurance.
    • Ensure that participants understand the expectations, discipline, and work ethic required to succeed in the program.
    • Evaluate participants during the Mental Toughness Program to identify their readiness for the full YouthBuild experience.
  • OSHA Safety Training:
    • Provide OSHA #500 (Construction Industry Outreach Trainer) and OSHA #510 (Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Construction Industry) certification training to ensure compliance with workplace safety standards.
    • Develop and implement safety training sessions, tailored to the needs of YouthBuild participants, ensuring a clear understanding of safety protocols and regulations.
    • Keep up-to-date with OSHA regulations and update training materials accordingly.
    • Promote a culture of safety by ensuring students adhere to safety guidelines during on-site training and projects.
  • Hands-On Project Supervision:
    • Supervise participants in hands-on construction projects, ensuring that all tasks are completed safely and to a high standard.
    • Provide real-world construction experience, teaching participants how to apply their learned skills on actual work sites.
    • Collaborate with local contractors and community organizations to identify project opportunities.
  • Program Collaboration:
    • Work closely with the YouthBuild program team to ensure alignment of educational objectives and participant success.
    • Assist in developing community partnerships to expand training opportunities and post-program employment for participants.
    • Participate in meetings and professional development sessions to stay current with industry best practices and educational strategies.

Required Qualifications & Experience:

  • High School Diploma
  • Prior experience in scheduling and supervising crews
  • Prior management experience with public or non-profit agencies
  • NCCER Certified Instructor (we will certify)
  • OSHA #500 (Construction Industry Outreach Trainer Certification) or willing to obtain. Also, OSHA #510 (Occupational Safety and Health Standards for Construction) certifications (we will certify)
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the construction industry (Union), preferably with a background in youth training programs
  • Strong knowledge of construction math principles and ability to teach arithmetic, geometry, fractions, area/volume calculations, and their application in construction settings
  • Proven ability to teach, mentor, and lead young adults, especially those from underserved communities
  • Experience in creating lesson plans, evaluating student performance, and adapting teaching methods
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage classroom and on-site safety, ensuring a productive and safe learning environment
  • Commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in educational and workplace settings

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working in a YouthBuild program or similar youth development initiative
  • Experience in designing mental toughness programs or equivalent resilience-building activities
  • First Aid and CPR certification
  • Familiarity with additional certifications in the construction field
  • Spanish language skills (verbal and written) preferred

Other Duties and Requirements:

  • DMV print-out, Class C Driver's License
  • First Aid/CPR certification is required as a condition of employment (or within 30 days of employment)
  • Employment is contingent upon validation of a good driving record
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Physical Requirements:

Ability to work on construction sites and lead students in hands-on tasks.

Must be able to lift heavy materials up to 50 pounds, stand for extended periods, and work in outdoor environments under varying weather conditions.
