Role Purpose:

The Operations and Maintenance Specialist I is responsible for the daily monitoring and basic operations of plant and pump/booster stations, conducting routine laboratory tests, and performing basic corrective and preventative maintenance tasks.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manages equipment operations both manually and via instrumentation panels, computer terminals, and programmable logic control units, adhering to established process control protocols. Observes and records operational conditions in a shift log, diagnosing and addressing basic operational issues as per procedures.
  • Conducts routine cleaning, lubrication, adjustment, inspection, and minor repairs on various machinery and equipment, including pumps, engines, and generators. Documents work performed and enters data into the appropriate systems, promptly reporting any operational issues to the supervisor.
  • Collects samples of water, wastewater, and other materials according to a set schedule, performing field tests to ensure proper chemical dosages for process control and odor management. Prepares chemical solutions and monitors inventory levels.
  • Executes routine laboratory tests and prepares reports in accordance with established procedures.
  • Calibrates portable meters for various measurements, including dissolved oxygen and pH levels.
  • Develops mechanical troubleshooting skills to identify necessary repairs, dismantling equipment as needed and using hand and power tools to restore safe and efficient operation.
  • Engages in manual labor, including cleaning and maintaining equipment and facilities, and properly disposing of waste in compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
  • Performs facility maintenance tasks, which may include replacing light fixtures, repairing windows, and painting.
  • Assists in estimating time and material costs for various projects and may support other areas of the facility as directed.
Work Environment:
  • Primarily operates in an industrial environment.
  • May be exposed to outdoor conditions and inclement weather.
  • Utilizes company vehicles as necessary.
  • May require occasional travel for training purposes.
  • May be part of a rotational on-call emergency response team.
  • Potential hazards include exposure to fumes, chemicals, noise, and moving machinery.
Qualifications

Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED, with proficiency in reading, writing, and understanding English instructions.
  • Six months to two years of relevant experience in a similar role, with a preference for candidates familiar with operational environments.
  • Experience with material handling equipment and precision measuring instruments is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with power tools and shop equipment is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Basic mathematical skills are required.
  • Some vocational training and mechanical aptitude are preferred, along with the ability to interpret data from various equipment.
  • Must be capable of diagnosing routine mechanical issues and implementing corrective actions.
  • Basic computer skills are necessary for operating process control and maintenance management systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and perform assigned duties independently while meeting production and quality standards.
  • Teamwork and a willingness to take on new responsibilities are essential.
  • Availability for rotational on-call duties may be required.
Certifications and Training:
  • Must possess any required water/wastewater licenses as mandated by regulatory agencies.
  • A valid driver's license and a clean driving record are necessary.
  • Completion of safety and operational training is required.
  • HAZWOPER certification may be required based on site needs.
  • Training in the use of personal protective equipment and safety protocols is essential.
  • Additional training in mechanical systems and energy management may be necessary.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and walk significant distances during shifts.
  • Close visual and auditory observation skills are necessary for detecting operational issues.
  • Frequent use of hands for handling tools and equipment is required.
  • Must be able to lift and carry weights up to 50 pounds, with occasional lifting of up to 60 pounds.
  • Ability to work in various positions, including heights and confined spaces, is necessary.
