Position Summary

This role involves assisting in the management of brood, nursery, production, and distribution operations, ensuring that all tasks are executed efficiently and in alignment with established operational protocols.

Key Responsibilities

This job description does not limit management's authority to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities at any time.

  • Formulates strategies for the optimal use of resources, machinery, and personnel to achieve production targets by overseeing and participating in:
    • Feeding and harvesting larvae
    • Handling and transferring live or deceased larvae and flies along with related byproducts
    • Collecting and managing BSF eggs and adult flies
    • Mixing feed both manually and with mechanized equipment
    • Transporting production equipment and feed containers
    • Cleaning and maintaining production tools and facilities, including washing and sanitizing equipment and performing other janitorial tasks as needed
    • Operating production machinery and equipment
  • Documents and gathers data using both written and digital systems.
  • Collaborates with the Farms Manager to ensure a consistent supply of healthy brood and coordinate loading schedules to sustain high egg production levels.
  • Informs all team members of standard operating procedures and any changes in protocols.
  • Works with managers and direct reports to uphold production and quality control standards.
  • Implements processes and programs to enhance safety, productivity, and profitability.
  • Adheres to DOT/OSHA and company standards and programs.
  • Ensures all employees receive necessary safety training and work in a safe manner; develops and enforces safety initiatives to minimize accidents and injuries.
  • Coordinates with management to address operational needs, equipment usage, and maintenance.
  • Provides leadership, communication, and mentorship to staff; fosters a motivated environment of trust, teamwork, accountability, and ownership.
  • Ensures that operational supplies are consistently available.
  • Identifies, documents, and implements opportunities for ongoing improvement.

Supervisory Duties:

  • Oversees the daily activities of team members.
  • Exercises supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include training staff; planning, assigning, and directing work; evaluating performance; addressing concerns and resolving issues.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's degree (AA) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical institution, or six months to one year of relevant experience and/or training, or a combination of education and experience.
  • Certificates, licenses, and registrations required: Must possess a valid U.S. driver's license and auto insurance as mandated by state regulations.
  • Computer skills required: Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and Outlook).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree focused on animal or environmental sciences
  • Proven track record of successful supervisory experience in a labor-intensive environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, productivity, work ethics, and innovation
  • Able to manage multiple tasks and work independently, in settings requiring both manual labor and administrative record-keeping
  • Ability to maintain accuracy and thoroughness in record-keeping with a solid understanding of required documentation, basic math skills, and handwriting techniques.
  • Ability to consistently and legibly enter data into manual records and/or computerized production systems.
  • Respect for diversity and the ability to collaborate with a wide range of teammates, customers, and organizations.
  • Demonstrated eagerness to learn
  • Experience in livestock management or farm environments is advantageous.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding company processes and information; a Confidentiality Agreement is required.

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly required to walk, stand, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crawl, and crouch.
  • Occasionally lifts up to 100 lbs.
  • Regularly required to reach with hands and arms.
  • Some travel may be necessary, approximately 10-15%.

Work Environment

Job functions will be performed in both office and production settings. Occasional evenings and weekends may be necessary.
