Silicate Department Manager

PQ is a leading global provider of silicates, silicas, and derivative products. Our products are used in a wide variety of industrial processes and many customer products, from decorative paints to green cement, from clean drinking water to green tires and from toothpaste to biofuels and beer.
Key Responsibilities:- Manage the safe, efficient, and EHS-conscious fiscal management of the Silicate Department.
- Communicate with the Site Manager and other staff personnel as necessary regarding plant and department issues.
- Identify and take action on areas of improvement.
- Comply with all federal, state, and local regulations and requirements as well as all company policies and procedures.
- Inform Site Manager of all issues, problems, or concerns of the ICD Department.
- Develop and administer yearly ICD plant budget.
- Direct Operators to assure product quality and quantity at optimum utilization of personnel and facilities.
- Provide technical assistance and instructions to correct off-standard and emergency conditions.
- Monitor and control unit performance. Report deviation from plans and budget and take action to correct deviation.
- Encourage and implement participative management strategies to assure commitment to the business of all plant personnel.
- Encourage and implement teamwork environment.
- Participate and develop yearly goals with employees and management.
- Ensure work areas are maintained in a clean and safe condition.
- Ensure compliance with corporate/plant policies and procedures.
- Manage operations to assure good environmental practices and stewardship to preserve PQ's good neighbor efforts.
- Actively support plant safety committee.
- Encourage commitment to CQI principles and Responsible Care and the use of techniques and methods to move safety, quality, and production to levels at or above the goals the plant has set.
- Demonstrate health, safety, and environmental leadership and commitment to Responsible Care.
- Work with maintenance manager in directing and optimizing maintenance resources utilized for the ICD areas.
- Serve as management representative for RC14001 and NSF 60.
- Responsible for the areas as defined in the Joliet Plot Shaded responsibilities under Management Systems, PQ Vision.
- Lead and participate in EHS, quality, and productivity initiatives.
- Encourage and support employee development.
- Perform special projects or other duties as directed.
- BS Degree in an appropriate technical discipline (Chemical Engineering preferable) with an advanced degree a plus.
- Minimum of five years of experience in the chemical industry in a manufacturing environment.
- Three (2-3) years of supervisory or management experience of increasing responsibility.
- Experience in supervising in a Union plant.
- CQI (Continuous Quality Improvement) techniques and methods, such as SPC and Six Sigma.
- Working knowledge of OSHA regulations and safety principles.
- Working knowledge of management systems, such as ISO 9001:2015 and RC 14001.
- Working knowledge of environmental regulations and compliance.
- Computer skills, such as Microsoft Office, Aspen, and SAP.
