Overview

The Engineering Division is dedicated to developing and maintaining community-focused infrastructure for the City of New Haven. This role encompasses public engagement, project conceptualization, engineering design, mapping, construction oversight, infrastructure evaluation, and asset management. The public infrastructure managed by this division includes bridges, roadways, sidewalks, drainage systems, coastal defenses, street lighting enhancements, and public facilities.

This position presents an excellent opportunity for a budding engineer to acquire significant experience in the Civil Engineering domain.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

This role involves professional and technical duties within the Civil Engineering field in a municipal context. Responsibilities include executing a range of engineering and technical tasks to create supporting designs and provide inspection services for projects managed by the Engineering Division or as assigned. The individual will engage with various aspects of the city's infrastructure, including Storm Water Management, Sidewalks, Roads, Bridges, Buildings, Environmental Permitting, and Flood Control.

Tasks will be assigned by the City Engineer or other Senior Engineers, with general supervision and evaluation based on the city's infrastructure objectives.

PRIMARY DUTIES
  • Utilizes ACAD and other technical tools to develop plans and specifications for diverse infrastructure requirements.
  • Conducts research and fact-finding on public concerns related to infrastructure matters.
  • Assists in formulating cost estimates for projects to be bid and reviews plans for compliance with city standards.
  • Collaborates with other Engineers to prepare reports and analyses for public information sessions.
  • Coordinates material testing with external laboratories to ensure construction products meet required standards.
  • Conducts field inspections on construction projects, including daily and progress reporting.
  • Performs additional related duties as necessary.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

A degree from an accredited college or university with a BS in Civil Engineering and 1-2 years of experience in a related field; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides similar knowledge, abilities, and skills.

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
  • Proficient in ACAD and other technical tools for creating designs, specifications, reports, and schedules.
  • Understanding of fundamental civil engineering practices, including material testing and inspection criteria.
  • Ability to perform various civil engineering calculations and studies related to infrastructure issues.
  • Capable of interpreting plans and specifications accurately.
  • Able to conduct field inspections or information gathering throughout different seasons as required.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Possession of a valid Driver's license.
  • Must obtain or be eligible to obtain the Engineer in Training (EIT) certification within three years of appointment as a condition of continued employment.
EMPLOYMENT TERMS

This is a non-tested position funded by a special fund. Continued employment is contingent upon the availability of future funding.

This position is part of a collective bargaining agreement.


Employment is subject to the successful completion of a pre-employment background check, physical examination, including drug screening, and a probationary period.
